Last night, the PTO sponsored a back to school gathering. In years past, these have been a picnic where each family brings its own food (we usually just eat before going), but this time the PTO decided to try a potluck. There wasn't very much food, unfortunately. A lot of people apparently were confused by the change. I think quite a few people ate who hadn't brought a dish to pass.

We had planned to take hotdogs, but Scott got out of work late and had to try to get in to pick up the car (more than $2000 worth of repairs. Ouch. But Scott thinks it means the car will last long enough for us to retire some debts). I dug through the freezer to see if we had anything and found a bag of chicken potstickers, so I cooked them up. They all got eaten, so it seems to have been a good pick.

There wasn't much food that I could eat. Everything was loaded with tomatoes and peppers or was otherwise something unwise for me to eat. I had a piece of zucchini bread and a mini cupcake and a couple of potstickers. It was enough to use to take my medications, but I was still pretty hungry. After our pan was empty, I left Cordelia on the playground and took the pan home. While I was there, I got some food. Then I went back.

It was getting cold, and I wanted nothing more than to go home, but they were setting up to show a movie, and Cordelia really wanted to stay. The movie was Snowflake the White Gorilla or something like that. Scott showed up around then, and after a short while, I abandoned him to watch Cordelia while I went home and lay down. Cordelia came home briefly after that to get a sweatshirt. I was almost asleep by the time they got back, but they apparently didn't stay for the whole movie.

Scott won an e-Bay auction for a WiiU, and it arrived yesterday. After they came back from the school, Scott and Cordelia unhooked the Wii (it's going down in the basement where, hopefully, Cordelia and her friends will use it) and hooked up the WiiU. They played around with it a bit before Scott realized that it was almost ten and that Cordelia really ought to be in bed. I need to spend some time learning how the WiiU works. I don't know that we'll get any games that interest me that use the new controller, but who knows? It's supposed to be able to play all our old Wii games. I'm assuming that means that the Wii remotes can be synched with it and used.

Today's soccer game was hot. The girls were all sweating, and a lot of them were red faced. Scott set up our sun umbrella. It provided just enough shade for me (once I got myself positioned properly). I was glad of it because it was a little after noon, and the sun was brutal. Scott didn't peg the umbrella down, so it blew over, almost onto the field. That's when he pulled out the pegs and put them in place.

It started raining during the last quarter of the game and continued for about an hour. There was no hint of lightning, so the game went on, and I'm sure the game scheduled after it went forward, too.

I think Cordelia's team lost, but I must confess that I wasn't paying close attention. I had a couple of nice conversations with other mothers that distracted me.

We don't know many of the girls on this team. The group we've been with for years, the group Scott coached last spring, got broken up this fall and split between two other teams. I don't know if there weren't enough girls any more to make up a team or what happened. It's inconvenient for us because it means practice is a long way away. Including Cordelia, we know five out of eighteen girls.

This year, the field is bigger and the goals are bigger. Cordelia says that they're also now allowed to head the ball, but we've told her she's not to do that. It's too dangerous. I'd just as soon they didn't allow it. Cordelia is likely going to play goalie every game again this season. A lot of the girls don't like playing goalie, but she does and asks for the chance. She did ask not to play offense this game. I think she dislikes all the running.

After the game, we went to the library and then got bubble tea. Passing through central campus was a bit crazy. It's a home game today. Kickoff isn't until eight, but it's a big game-- The U is playing Notre Dame. There were people all over the place, mostly wearing Michigan colors.

Cordelia's teacher specifically told his class to watch the game tonight. Cordelia wants to try it. She's never watched football before, and she's curious. I'm hopeful that she'll find it boring enough not to mind that we send her to bed before the game ends.
