The CPAP thing is interesting. I'm only really comfortable during the ramp up, and need to be asleep by the time it reaches full pressure. So if I have insomnia, I can feel when the switch happens, and (on the advice of a sleep tech), I turn it off and on again to start the new cycle.
Also, for a long time, the CPAP made me cough every night when I started using it. This turned out to be because the initial air coming through doesn't have much moisture in it because the water reservoir has to heat up to create water vapor for humidifying. This was fixable -- my machine (and I assume others) has a way to be told to preheat the water reservoir, which takes 15 to 20 minutes. Now I do that as part of my bedtime ritual, and it's helped quite a bit.
