I'm constantly amazed at some of the research fails in published historical novels. I mean, the occasional boo-boo is inevitable, but sometimes there are errors about things that are easy to check and that should have been caught by the editor, if not the author. The kind of error you mention is certainly a red flag: if the author can't get that right...
