As to Phryne/Jack, it may be in part that I read the books before I saw a single episode. Thinking about Inspector Robinson as a romantic possibility took some adjustment. The actors do have chemistry with each other; I'm just not... I can't see it working. Phryne should never be monogamous.
I think the books have done fine with Dot and Hugh by emphasizing that there are a lot of things Dot considers necessary to do before they marry. The books frequently have her working on her trousseau, and I seem to recall her commenting that it would take her another two or three years to have everything ready. There's also the question of whether or not Hugh is in a position to afford to get married. I got the impression, in the books, that he might want to wait until he gets a promotion. They're both so very young that I have trouble seeing it as something to hurry into, especially with the issue of religion and of keeping relatives happy. (I suppose the question of sex might come up, but I feel like they can deal with that one way or another without rushing to get married.)
