If Cordelia goes to Skyline, the one we're zoned for, she won't have to apply. She'd only have to apply for Huron (or her friend for Skyline) because the district gives priority to kids who actually live within their particular areas.

Community is different in that it's a special program rather than a standard high school and is of very limited size. There are always three to five times as many kids who want to go there as the building can actually accommodate, so they do a lottery for incoming freshmen and maintain a waitlist for all four years.

There are some other local programs that require applications (two IB programs come to mind immediately), but they're all sufficiently far away that there's no way we could get Cordelia there. I think a friend told me last year that, including private and charter schools, there are sixteen high school options locally.

Even teaching something required isn't enough to get a teacher hired in a small school. The middle school teachers at Cordelia's current school all have to be certified in multiple core subjects because there aren't enough students to justify a different teacher for each one. Cordelia's grade has two core teachers, one math/science and one social studies/English. The sixth grade is half again as big and so needs three simultaneous classes and had to find three teachers certified in all four subjects. I suspect that was a huge challenge.
