As a reader, I much prefer footnotes, but I remember writing papers on a typewriter when I was in college, and footnotes were nasty because you had to figure out how much space you needed for them on each page and whether that shifted the main text enough to change where a given note needed to be.

So I have some sympathy for people who choose endnotes. Footnotes are easier to do now than they used to be, but I don't know what the constraints are for doing book layouts in terms of placing things like that. I could see endnotes being somehow cheaper.
