Second and third tier works, too, as a description. I suspect that, for me, the game references are simply very deeply ingrained. I mean, when I watch TV shows and movies, I think of certain characters as npcs, too. The distinction seems to be a useful one in analyzing stories, and it's a term that my husband understands instantly when I use it.
