Book Logging
AlphaFlyer. Second Mouse - This is an Avengers/James Bond crossover set years before the Avengers movie. Clint Barton and James Bond get sent on a mission together. I had enough fun with this that I stayed up past my bedtime to read more.
Blythe. Three Sisters, Bound - This is a fairy tale fic from Yuletide 2012. It's derived from several Russian fairy tales. It focuses on the women rather than on the princes. I liked that.
Branch. Cloud Hands - This is in the same universe as Branch's story that I logged last time. It focuses on Hinata as she researches her clan's history and gains confidence in herself.
Cleopatra in Space: Book One, Target Practice - Fifteen year old Cleopatra gets thrown forward in time to the unimaginably distant future where people think she's destined to save them all from an encroaching empire. They stick her into a school, so there's school stuff going on in addition to a dangerous quest. The book's really quite short, just enough to make me look forward to book 2 (due out in spring of 2015).
hydrangea. Granite - This is a fairy tale fic from Yuletide 2012 (I'm working my way through that archive, having failed to do it before). It's based around "King Thrushbeard." Granite is the main character's name and nature. She's made of rock and needs rock to sustain herself. Her husband is a humanoid bird. All the people in this particular world are in some way not quite standard human (and I hate that phrasing. I just couldn't come up with a better way to say it).
Pierce, Tamora. Bloodhound - I read this along with Mark Reads. I'm not sure I would have gotten through the book otherwise, not because it's bad but because of the tension in it. This time, Beka's sent to another city to try to find out who's counterfeiting silver pieces. The new setting and Beka's unfamiliarity with it play a major part in the story.
Started but not finished:
Akunin, Boris. The Winter Queen - I made it about a third of the way into this book. I was interested in the setting (nineteenth century Moscow), but I never really connected with the main character. I peeked at the ending and hated it. I might try another book of Akunin's, but the repercussions of the ending of this one would really, really irritate me (best case).
Cross, William. The Life and Secrets of Almina Carnarvon: a Candid Biography of the 5th Countess of Carnarvon of Tutankhamun Fame - I suppose it's a weird thing to say about a biography, but there was too much detail for me. There was a lot of mention of particular dinner parties or social gatherings without any information about why I should care about those particular occasions. I suppose that, taken together, they make patterns, but I think I'd have been happier with summaries. There wasn't enough of the sort of detail that would interest me. I can see that those details would be speculation at best, but I wanted more of a feeling that I was reading about people.
Ferris, Monica. Framed in Lace - This is a murder mystery. I think I read some mysteries the author wrote under another name, but I'm not positive. The series of mysteries centers on a needlecraft store and it's patrons. I didn't get very far into this one. I didn't dislike it. I just didn't feel any strong need to finish.
Fluke, Joanne. Apple Turnover Murder - I think maybe I need to give up on mysteries for a while. I just can't seem to get myself motivated to read any of them. This one had recipes interspersed that were actually for things I could see myself making. Maybe I should get more of these from the library just to get the recipes. Who am I kidding? These are mostly cookies, and I can't make cookies without utterly exhausting myself.
Johnston, Linda O. Sit, Stay, Slay - Another mystery. I didn't get very far into this one. I simply didn't connect with the main character, and I don't love dogs enough for that to carry the book.
Kuhn, William M. Mrs. Queen Takes the Train - I barely started this, but I can't renew it because somebody else wants it. I got it because a review made it sound really good, but I'm not sure it's for me given that RPF makes me deeply uncomfortable and that this is very definitely that. It's about Queen Elizabeth II walking away from her job for a while and about the people who try to cover up the fact that she's missing.
Park, Barbara. Junie B. en primer grado: Aloha ja - This is a translation of an early reader chapter book. I got about half way through it and then stalled out because I really needed a Spanish-English dictionary and couldn't find mine (Cordelia took it years ago. It's lost somewhere in the depths of her room). I've ordered a dictionary and will try this one again once it arrives.
Webb, Holly. Rose - I really thought I was going to finish this. I think I read it all but about fifty pages in the middle. I just ran out of time. The book was due back at the library. The book's about an orphan who goes into service in a magician's house. It's fairly obvious early on that she has magic, but she doesn't want it in the least. She has her future planned out, and magic isn't a part of it. There's a villain kidnapping children and the adventure of rescuing them. I enjoyed what I read. Looking at GoodReads, there appear to be sequels to this. I'll have to look for them.
