Setting to 78F is very undesirable from a cost point of view. Higher would be better. A good chunk of the summer, it will be well over 90F outside here.
In years past, we usually went with 80F.
In the winter, all of the fuel savings guidelines say that we should never set the thermostat for over 68F. We usually go for between 70F and 73F during the day, depending on how I'm feeling (as I'm home alone most days). We set it a good bit lower at night, sometimes as low as 60F.
