To distract myself from making, undoing, and redoing trivial edits on my Sky High fics that are awaiting beta comments, I'm trying to look at some almost completed Chronicles of Amber fics and wondering if anyone's around to brainstorm either here in the comments or elsewhere. I mainly need someone to tell me that the ideas aren't utterly ridiculous
All three stories connect to the story I wrote for Yuletide last year, The Wisdom That You Brought, which is 7300 words of snapshots from Vialle's POV up through the middle of the Corwin books. All three are stuck with tires spinning in a rut of ice. The more I try to make them move, the less traction I have, but I've got between 2500 and 5000 words on each, so I'd like to finish them.
Spoilers for the canon under the cut.
The primary AU element for the original fic is having Vialle also be one of Oberon's children, just one he doesn't know about, while still being married to Random. The rest could, I think, fit in the interstices of canon. It does assume that Oberon is a rapist (canon about Dalt's origins) and otherwise a monster (arguably supported by canon in ways beyond the whole rapist part).
Story 1: What Vialle did in Amber while Random was at the Courts of Chaos at the end of the Merlin books. I'm certain that what the Vialle from The Wisdom That You Brought would want to do is to kill Oberon. He's a perpetual danger to too many people she loves. I think she'd see the point right after he repaired the Pattern as the only opportunity she-- or anyone else-- might ever get. I'm stuck on whether or not she should succeed or even be able to locate the Primal Pattern. Well, there's no story if she just wanders the mountainside and can't find the dratted thing, but she's never been there and isn't all that practiced at Shadowshifting. I thought about the Unicorn showing her, but I'm not convinced that the Unicorn would, not given what Vialle wants to do. I definitely can't see Gerard or Dworkin helping, either. I also can't see guards who don't want to die miserably letting Prince Random's blind wife wander off into the wilds unescorted which means a witness who she'll have to deal with somehow.
Story 2: A take on what the hell Random was actually thinking/trying to do when he went after Eric during the early Corwin books. It's just not actually going anywhere. I've got a couple of okay-ish conversations between Random and Gerard and Random and Eric, but there's zero through line. I might need to tear out a good bit and replace it, but I can't tell which bits (I've got between 2K and 3K words).
Story 3: This one needs a section in which Vialle does something to resolve the predicament established in the two chapters I've already written. I wrote those last year for Yuletide but didn't post them with the other chapters because I didn't have an ending or time to find one. I think that I'm kind of stalled because I want a perfect 10.0 landing on the first draft, more because of things in my life when I was originally trying to write it than because of the story actually requiring that.
At any rate, my recipient had listed several characters that they liked. The two I didn't get into the posted story were Brand and Luke, and I kind of wanted to put them in proximity, temporally speaking. I didn't see a way to do it before Brand died, so I went with the ancient Amber Diceless tradition of resurrecting him nastier than he was when he toppled into the Abyss. Then I had him kidnap Vialle in order to put pressure on Random.
I want to have Vialle get herself out of it. I'm sure there are plenty of people who'd be happy to rescue her. I just don't want them to because she can do it herself. I had wisps of ideas last November, but they've vanished.
