We've been battling mice for a couple of years now. I set traps at first, but the mice weren't very interested in them, and I kept finding poops in horrifying places, so eventually I gave in and hired a critter place to deal with it. They make regular visits every three months, and when they missed one in January we had mice in the house again by March. Ugh.
They say that it's important to check the outside of your house for any holes that they could be getting in through -- even a 1/4 inch hole could be a problem, or missing caulk where a pipe goes through the wall. If you find any, they say to put in steel wool or copper mesh, then caulk. They've done some of that at my house, and it helps. Though mice still get in anyway, somewhere else. For a while we had a highway of them climbing straight up a patch of brick and getting in through a hole several feet up in the air. Sigh....
