The food coloring didn't actually help me find the leak, though, so I felt silly at the time. Of course, not seeing it come through made us look for other things that might leak.
At this point, we're figuring that the kitchen-to-sewer join replacement was a happy thing. It was so corroded that it was going to fail soon, and we'd never have thought to look for a problem until after it went because it was underneath the stairs, in an area that's hard to get to.
