I expected it, really, but that doesn't make the whole thing any easier. Basically, Scott has to work both days this weekend. His supervisor only just informed him of this fact this afternoon.

That's fairly standard for the company-- They assign extra shifts based on how much they still need to produce at the end of the week to fill existing orders. It sucks big time since it means that we can never make weekend plans that require Scott until after 3pm on Friday.

This weekend, Scott's mother's hosting a cookout for some of my relatives so that they can meet Delia. Scott won't be there. I'm going to have to rely on my sister not to flake on me, to show up on time and drive Delia and me in her rented car. This prospect does not fill me with joy.

I strongly suspect that giving Scott both days is a bit of underhanded retaliation for his having taken yesterday off sick. He's much more likely to get assigned overtime if he's had a sick day or a vacation day. (He's only entitled to 3 sick days every six months. If he takes more than that, he gets a form letter reprimand stuck in his file and has to have a meeting with his supervisor. Vacations are messier. I think at this point he gets three weeks (which must be taken as weeks, beginning on a Monday and ending on a Sunday) and four or five single days. To be sure of getting *any* day off, he has to schedule the vacation time at least a month in advance, and if it turns out that he's not assigned to work that day, he still loses the time. They'll also require him to work hours outside his normal shift on days he's scheduled off. That is, they'll give him his 7am-3pm but ask him to work 3am-7am or 3pm-7pm.

It's times like this when I remember why I hate Scott's job so much. I wish he could find something better. But he's not even looking right now because the job market's so bad. Anybody need a Linux sysadmin whose only experience is with our home network?
