Nov. 20th, 2006 03:36 pmI've finished cataloging most of the books for Delia's pre-school. I'll be able to return them all as soon as I find somebody to provide transportation. (Right after I post this, I'll be calling the mother who's helped me with this before. She has to take her daughter to class tomorrow anyway.).
Now I just have to deal with all the things that need to be done in the building because they're too big to pack up easily or because they're used often or because they're mixed media (books with cassette tapes mostly).
After that, I'll deal with the things I've set aside to repair. I just have to wait for the book tape I've ordered to arrive. We couldn't find any in any of the office supply stores we checked, so I gave in an ordered it online. With luck, it won't take too long to arrive. I've got a tote of things that need repairs of varying levels of urgency. I didn't bother with acid free tape because that costs a lot more (about twice as much for 2/3 as much tape). These books are high use paperbacks, for the most part. The repairs are intended to add a few years of life by keeping all the pieces together and so save a bit on the pre-school's expenses, nothing more.
I'm going to be ordering at least one property stamp through my sister-in-law (She does Stamp It Up! Parties). I just have to decide what it should say and whether or not we need more than one. Labeling the books that go with tapes differently from other books might be helpful, and labeling the books that belong to the teacher differently would definitely be helpful. Other possibilities include stamping the holiday books (shelved separately from the rest) and stamping the books that go in various discovery kits and such to show the specific location. I probably won't buy more than two stamps. They're not cheap, and while I can ask for reimbursement, the pre-school's budget is tiny. I may just stick with the one stamp that I consider truly necessary and leave the others as a written wish-list for later years.
In other pre-school news, all four of my scarves sold at the fund-raiser. Turnout, from what I've been told, was very low. I don't think that the auction raised nearly as much money as was hoped. That's going to make the year harder in quite a few ways because it will limit what's available for art supplies, snacks, field trips and so on.
I'd love to ask for new bookshelves for the library. The current shelves are so short that most of the books can't stand upright. They can only be stored stacked on top of each other, and that makes keeping them in order (and finding things) very hard. I think that some pieces of the current shelves won't last more than another year or two. Of course, repairing the existing shelves will be cheaper and simpler than installing new shelves. I suppose I can only ask. Maybe there's a carpenter among the parents this year who'd be willing to donate labor. That's likely the only way that new shelves will ever happen.
Now, I'm giving my time to crocheting some gift scarves (to be given Thursday, so I've got a tight deadline) and to writing my Yuletide fic. The Yuletide story is going okay but keeps insisting on being something other than what I expected. Right now, the characters are kind of looking at each other and at me and going, "What next?" I have to answer the question, and the characters aren't helping at all. Now that the cataloging is done, my evenings definitely belong to the fic (I can crochet while Delia's up and about, but writing's harder then). My goal is to finish it this weekend so that I have flexibility on getting it beta read and on rewriting it.
Our weekend looks to be busy. Scott's brother and his family are coming to Michigan for Thanksgiving. We'll all spend the day with Scott's parents. Friday will feature a birthday party for the older of our nieces. I have to figure out transportation for that because Scott will be working when it starts. If Delia and I rely on him, we'll be at least two hours late. Saturday, Scott's brother and his family will come to our house. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that Scott won't have to work, but it's quite possible that he will. He didn't last weekend, and he took a sick day (massive allergic reaction) last week. If they're running any lines, they'll consider both of those things when they decide who gets stuck with the Saturday shift.
