Technical Troubles
Mar. 5th, 2007 09:00 amAny ideas on this would be appreciated-- I'm trying to complete my Weiss Day fic, but MSWord is giving me fits. It keeps locking up for 5-20 minutes at a time (with a varying length of time between problems). I can use other programs, and Word does eventually unlock, but it's very hard to keep writing when I can't keep typing or save.
I'm running a Mac with OS X (10.4.8) and MS Office 2004. The trouble started Friday night, but I didn't really pay much attention to it because I was doing something else and had only opened a half page long document so that I could reference it while GM'ing my Amber game. The problem has happened with every document I've opened since then.
Turning networking (airport) on and off seems to affect the problem to some extent, but the effect isn't consistent or reliable enough for me to be sure there's a connection. (I want to be able to work while online because I was talking to one of my beta readers in an effort to pin point some specific problems in the flow of the current story. I'll work offline if I have to, but working online would be better.)
Word generally is locking up right when I open a document. It's about 50-50 when I save (mostly when I try a save as rather than just a straight up save). It will almost always lock again if I make a change or scroll up or down and will sometimes lock again without obvious provocation. (I have a test document up, and it's locked at least twice while I've been writing this. Once on being opened and once just because.)
We ran a virus check last night (nothing). I'm going to be doing a TechTool check later this morning, and we're considering downloading other software to see if we can get around the problem that way. (I did try translating my Weiss Day fic into AppleWorks, but that went badly.)
I'm particularly cranky about this because we'd cleared about seven hours yesterday for me to finish this stupid fic. I'm not going to have more than half an hour at a time to work on it between now and the deadline, so the resulting fic will be rather less well written than I'd hoped for.
Any ideas? Rants about how evil MS is won't particularly help me, so please don't.
