Sorry to have been so silent and not to have replied to comments or e-mail. We're having some technical difficulties here.

On Monday, one of the hinges on my laptop froze and snapped. The wires are intact, so I can still use the laptop, but the lid/screen is perched precariously and wobbles a bit when I type. Scott has ordered a replacement part ($100!!!) and will try to install it tomorrow. He had been thinking of trying to do it yesterday, but we decided that him going to the doctor for the three month long cough was more important (He had Monday through Thursday of this week off work).

We've been trying to do a thorough backup of my laptop all week and having the process crash in the middle each time. Tonight, we'll try again. The problem seems to be corruption somewhere in my Library files which may mean that we can't back up my e-mail. We'll be trying tonight with Carbon Copy Cloner for the first time. With luck, that will be able to bypass the problem so that we can go ahead and attempt the repair.

If the repair goes badly-- even if I don't lose any data-- I may be offline for quite a while. Replacing the laptop is not something we're going to be able to afford for many months (especially this close to Christmas and with the expense of the hinge replacement and the storage drive we bought for the full backup (we've needed a good storage drive for a long time, so that won't be wasted money even if my laptop dies)). I'll find a way to check my e-mail, even in the worst case, but I probably won't be reading LJ or IJ or spending any time on AIM. I also won't end up doing much writing as I can't tolerate writing by hand for any length of time.

I'm going to do a small update to my website tonight, at least enough to get my Yuletide story up. If I have time, I'll try to put [livejournal.com profile] lunargeography's stuff up, too. I've needed to do that for months now and have just kept folding under stress and putting it off.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed because this would be a very, very bad time for me to lose my entire support network, but it may happen. If it does, it won't be that I'm ignoring you all.

In other news, Scott's taking Singulair for the cough. He also had a just-in-case chest x-ray. We haven't gotten a call about that, so we're assuming that it was clean. He thinks that the doctor he saw this time took him seriously. (The one he saw in mid-December told him it was a virus and that he should get more rest.)

I've also been informed that the U's policy now is to review long term disability cases every six to twelve months. This means that I'm probably going to have to go through the process twice a year from now on. My feelings on this are rather like they'd be if I'd been informed that I have to have root canals twice a year with no anesthesia.
