On the theory that all knowledge is contained on LJ--

Does anybody have experience getting either mildew stains or ground in grease out of clothes?

We participated in a kids' clothing co-op where each family passes on the stuff that no longer fits to other families. This time, we have two items that are quite nice apart from stains.

The first is a lavender winter coat. It's dirty and stained. Some of the dirt is just dirt (around the cuffs mostly). Some of it looks like permanent marker (black). Most of it, though, is yellowish and looks a lot like the sort of greasy build up one gets near a stove that's used for a lot of frying. I've tried bleach for the non-grease stains with little success, but I rather think that they could be covered by dying the dratted thing black or even dark blue. It's the grease that defeats me.

The other item is a matching set, shirt and pants. They're a rather blah shade of yellow, but they're solid cotton and quite warm. They also have speckled stains that I'm 95% are from mildew. Bleach also hasn't helped there.

I won't let Cordelia wear them as they are, and I'm not sure they wouldn't be rejected for donation. I certainly wouldn't offer them to anyone I know. It would feel condescending. It's one thing to pass along things that are actually nice.

At any rate, does anybody have ideas about removing these stains? Is it hopeless? I'm going to do a bit of googling later to see what I can find (right now, I'm taking a brief breather from readying other things for a trip to the re-use center so that we can clear out more space. Googling will happen next break or after the crap's out of the house).
