Cordelia has now written two letters to the boy she cried over at the beginning of the summer. We went with letters rather than e-mail because the boy's parents didn't list anything but a mailing address in the school directory. (I'd have hesitated to use the phone because the boy's parents may not speak English well enough to make using the phone straightforward. Of course, by now, his English is probably up to the task, and Cordelia would like to talk to him. Hard to say.)

The first letter simply said that she missed him and asked if he'll be back at school in the fall. She was afraid he was going back to Korea, and I couldn't offer reassurance as I have no idea how far into their graduate programs his parents are (or if it's both parents taking classes or just one or what). He wrote back to say that he would be at school in the fall and to ask if she could come over to play.

Cordelia delayed answering for a while, but last night she decided to write back. I had to help her think of what to say because the answer to the coming over to play question was a little complicated-- It depends on whether or not his parents can provide transportation. I didn't have anything to do with how she ended her letter, though. The last question she asked was, "Do you like me?"

I'm not sure whether or not to label this as Cordelia's first crush. The Chinese boy in kindergarten might have been that (she still hopes he'll come back from China. I think she knows it's unlikely, but she hopes). I'm not sure, though. The boy in kindergarten didn't get the same amount of mental attention, at least not out where I could hear it. She also didn't name a stuffed animal after the boy from kindergarten and has named one (her new favorite. Squish has been pushed aside) after the boy from first grade.

At least both boys seem like nice kids, at least as far as I can judge from volunteering in the library. Cordelia's looking at boys who are friends, too, and I see that as a good thing.
