Oct. 20th, 2011 09:14 amYesterday's flu shot expedition went as well as could be expected. Delia and her teacher both forgot that she was supposed to meet me in the office at 2:20, so I had to go down to the classroom to get her. Fortunately, I'd allowed time for that. I'd also allowed time for us to stop at home for a short while. I gave Delia some ibuprofen in hopes of helping with the side effects of the shot, and Delia loaded up her backpack with books and her current favorite stuffed animal, Sealy.
It was raining pretty hard when we headed for the bus stop. Delia had been antsy and eager to leave, so we arrived at the bus stop with fully ten minutes to spare. She wasn't any too pleased about waiting.
The bus came pretty much on time and dropped us off about when I expected. We had a several block walk to deal with, including crossing a couple of busy streets. There are bus stops closer to the pediatrician's office, but they're on the wrong side of a four lane street and a long way from a crosswalk.
The wind was fierce enough that it turned Delia's umbrella inside out twice. Scott called while we were walking, so I knew we'd have a ride home. That was a relief. We could have taken the bus, but it would have meant a lot more walking in the rain.
The flu shot itself was brief, over rapidly. Delia cried in anticipation of it. She was so scared. Then we waited in the waiting room for Scott to show up. Delia's biggest concern, post shot, was making sure she got some of the animal crackers the nurses usually give out after shots. We had to ask for them specially this time. They weren't offered, but we saw other kids with them.
On the way home, we stopped at McDonalds and bought Delia a milk shake. She'd nearly finished it by the time we got home.
Delia asked me not to stay in the gym during basketball practice. She'd really like me to go home, but practice is only an hour long. Leaving doesn't make sense, particularly in bad weather. I could do it. It's only about a ten minute round trip. I just would rather not. Last year, I sat in the gym and read during practices. Last night, I tried to find another place to sit. There's a staircase near the gym, along the hall by the library. I sat there. It was no more or less comfortable than sitting on the floor in the gym. That may change as the weather gets colder-- The gym is always warm. The rest of the school varies wildly.
