Cordelia (she's changed what she wants to be called again, so I'm trying to remember) had Wednesday off from school. I had an appointment to see my psychiatrist in the afternoon, so we both took the bus into town at about 12:30. We stopped at Eastern Accents, a bakery downtown to get a treat. The selection wasn't great. I'm not used to going in that late in the day, so I expected more variety. We saw [livejournal.com profile] booniverse there and said hello.

The appointment was pretty straightforward. I got refills for my prescriptions, and we talked a bit about ways to make the holidays run more smoothly. I suspect that, next time I go in, in January, we'll be talking about tweaking my meds, but with all the fuss of the Christmas season, now didn't seem like the right time. While I was talking to the doctor, Cordelia sat in the lobby and read. The receptionist has always been willing to provide the minimal supervision Cordelia needs, even when she was a year or two younger.

After we got home, Cordelia went out to play, and I made a pumpkin pie. The pie crust we'd bought at the store wasn't quite large enough. It only held about 3/4 of the filling. I felt bad pouring the rest down the garbage disposal, but, really, what else was I going to do with it? The pie came out pretty well. I was surprised by how easy it was to make. It needed to be refrigerated after it cooled. There wasn't room in the fridge, so we put it in the car over night and brought it in in the early morning.

Scott had to work late, Wednesday evening, with no real warning. It was either stay late or go in for four hours Thursday morning. He chose to stay late.

On Thanksgiving, we all slept until about 8:30 or so. The food preparation was mostly simple and didn't need to be done particularly early. The first thing we started in on was making the chicken and noodles. Those are a tradition in Scott's family, but we'd never made them before. The noodles are egg noodles. We had to roll out the dough and cut it into pieces. I don't think we rolled it out thin enough, but Scott thought it was okay when we finally got to eating it. We cooked the noodles in the crock pot rather than on the stove because we had time and didn't think we needed a big pot taking up space on the stove.

We used one of those packages of prepared bread cubes for stuffing rather than cutting up a loaf the way we usually do. I sort of followed the directions on the packet, but I used a lot more butter for cooking the onions and mushrooms. My mother always says that a lot of butter makes the stuffing richer. The packet called for about two thirds of a stick of butter. I used two sticks. Scott had to go out after mushrooms because the ones we'd bought on Saturday had gotten slimy and mushy. He also managed to find some dried cherries, so I threw those in.

We put the turkey in about 2:45, right after my brother arrived. I hadn't expected Sam so early. He'd promised to call before he left Kalamazoo, but he forgot, so the first we knew was when he rang the doorbell. Cordelia had been looking forward to seeing her uncle, but she got quite shy once he'd actually arrived. She did play some Wii games with him, and she and Sam and Scott played Fluxx for a couple of hours in the evening.

The recipe for the sweet potatoes calls for baking the mashed mixture for about thirty minutes. I microwaved it for quite a while instead. The oven was occupied.

We had dinner about 5:00 or 5:30. Everybody had plenty to eat. We had a turkey breast and a salad and green beans in addition to all the food I mentioned earlier. Scott also brought out the last of the most recent loaf of bread (he tried making potato bread with whole wheat flour). I thought that was overkill, but he said we might as well because it will go bad if we don't eat it.

We put off dessert until about seven. We had pie and ice cream. I'm not sure that chocolate chip cookie dough is the best choice to accompany pumpkin pie but that's what we had (we also had, in the basement freezer, a container of red velvet cake ice cream. I don't think that would have been better).

Today, Scott had to work about four hours (the overtime he worked on Wednesday means getting off earlier today). They had him cleaning and painting, busy work mostly. They weren't actually running any lines. He's on his way home now. He'll stop for groceries on the way, but we should still have the afternoon. We have no plans except to avoid all the Black Friday craziness. We might go to Target on Sunday because Cordelia wants a belt and is quite urgent about needing it now. It depends on how we feel.
