We went to the new parent orientation for middle school last night. I was more than a little overwhelmed, but it sounds like the middle school has some very good programs and would have real opportunities for Cordelia to do things she might enjoy. Cordelia would have the choice of orchestra or choir for her music (she plays viola, so she's not a candidate for band). Sixth graders spend one quarter learning bits and pieces of Spanish, French and Latin so that, in seventh grade, they can choose one of those languages to go on with. (They don't have enough kids for Latin every year, and someone said they may offer Chinese if there's enough interest).

There are also quite a few clubs and several opportunities to play sports. In sixth grade, everybody plays. In seventh and eighth grade, not everybody does. It is pay to play, $150 for as many sports as you can fit into a year. (There are five seasons with a different set of sports each season.)

This is all stuff Cordelia wouldn't have access to if she stays at her current school, and it does weigh in the decision. Cordelia also says she's ready for a change and that she wants the challenges of a new school. Most of my strong reasons for wanting her to stay at her current school are more about me and how convenient it would be. I mean, the STEAM focus and the fact that they're planning to give each kid a dedicated iPad sound good, but I have no idea what they'd really mean.

I worked bagel Friday this morning. I wasn't scheduled to, but the parent who was signed up came about half an hour late (he was coming across town, and apparently the roads were bad), so I pitched in to help. I cut some bagels, until enough people showed up to take over that task for me. Then I handled the cash box.

We had about a dozen bagels left at the end. Some people who normally buy didn't because they'd been in a rush this morning or because they had forgotten. Some of the fruit juice was frozen. Between Fridays, it's stored in a garage. They tried storing it in the teachers' lounge, but when they did that, several bottles would disappear each week. We almost didn't sell out of fragels which is unheard of. The last of them went to the special ed kids who almost never arrive in time to get them. Their teacher bought them for them.
