Cordelia and I went shopping with Scott's sister and her daughter around four yesterday. We went to Kohl's. Cordelia was hoping to find the perfect dress for the upcoming talent show, but she was pretty vague on what that entailed, and she said that her friend with whom she'll be performing has to approve the dress and find a dress of her own that goes with it.

I think we may be better off trying to get the girls to go shopping together. There's a Kohl's here in Ann Arbor, and it's near Briarwood Mall, so we'd be able to try JC Penney's and other similar stores. Of course, the hitch is that this girl's mother would have to come along, and she doesn't drive either. I'm not sure about trying to wedge five people into our car. We could probably do it, but it would be difficult.

I did find two pairs of jeggings for Cordelia for $13 each. She was reluctant to try them on because they weren't pretty like the dresses she'd been looking at, but she said she would wear them if we brought them home (some of her pants are getting short, so she's in need of more). I also found some shorts that fit Cordelia. I got four pairs for $12 each. It's time to retire some of Cordelia's older shorts. I think those are size eight, and she now wears size twelve. She can still fit the old shorts, more or less, but they don't look right.

We didn't return the red dress we got last time we shopped with Scott's sister. I had intended to since Cordelia said it wouldn't do for the talent show. Then she said it might do after all and that she still wanted it. I have no idea when she's going to wear the dratted thing if she doesn't wear it in the talent show, but it was only $16, so I'm not hugely stressed out over it.

After Kohl's, Cordelia had had it with clothes shopping, so she and I went to Barnes & Noble while Scott's sister took her daughter to JC Penney's. Cordelia and I bought a couple of books as a birthday present for the party she's going to today, and I bought three books for Cordelia and one for me. The books cost more than the clothes.

Then we met up with Scott, Scott's parents, and Scott's sister's husband and son at a restaurant. It was a Japanese hibachi place that also serves Chinese food. It wasn't my first choice, but Cordelia was adamantly against my first choice, a Mediterranean place. We were seated at six, but we didn't get food until some time after seven. The three people who ordered stuff to be prepared on the grill at the table didn't get food until about twenty minutes after the rest of us did. The food wasn't particularly good. Our waitress was bad about refreshing our drinks. They also tried to bill us for an extra meal. They did give us a bit off of our bill as an apology for how long it took to get our food, but they added a 'service charge' of eighteen percent because our party was so large.

After all of that, it was good to get home. What with one thing and another, Cordelia didn't get to bed until around ten. I did call my mother while Cordelia was in the shower-- I was curious to hear what she thought about our options for middle school. She was firmly of the opinion that keeping Cordelia at her current school is the best option. She said that we really can't overestimate the value of being able to walk to school and that it's likely, since this is being set up as a magnet school, that the academics will be comparable to or better than what we'd get at the middle school. She thinks the district will put a lot of money into Cordelia's current school to make it more attractive. She didn't think that sports and after school clubs were a big deal. She did acknowledge that wanting to stay with friends might be a big factor, but she pointed out that Cordelia likely won't have classes with the people she knows if she goes to the middle school. She thinks Cordelia will make new friends easily enough.

I don't like most mysteries. I keep trying them, though, because there are some authors and series that I like quite a lot. I can't tell ahead of time which mysteries will work for me. GoodReads hasn't proved very helpful in that way, either. Well, a lot of those recommendations are for things the library doesn't have, and my experience with GoodReads recommendations is not sufficiently happy for me to gamble by buying books in any genre based on its say-so. (GoodReads recommendations do tend to be much better than Amazon's recommendations, however.)

I tend to like atypical mysteries, the ones that are only classified as mysteries because they aren't something else. I tend not to like puzzle mysteries. Agatha Christie's novels, for example, almost never work for me. I can read and enjoy her short stories, and I liked the Tommy and Tuppence books, but all the Poirot and Miss Marple novels lose my interest rapidly. I tried a lot of Ngaio Marsh as a teenager because my mother loved her books, but I only liked two of them, and I didn't like those as mysteries-- I liked them for the theater elements.

I like Margot Arnold, Marian Babson (before she got all cat obsessed), Dorothy Sayers, Margery Allingham, Donna Andrews, Nancy Atherton, Kerry Greenwood, Emma Lathen/R.B. Dominic, Peter O'Donnell, Susan Holtzer, some Dell Shannon/Elizabeth Linington/Leslie Egan, Charlotte MacLeod, Roger van Gulik (problematic), Arthur Upfield (deeply problematic from what I understand, but I devoured his books), and Alexander McCall Smith (No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency series only. Also problematic). I tend to like historical mysteries or mysteries set in parts of the world I know little about. I have a weakness for stories set in research libraries or around theatrical productions.

I tend to be skeptical of mystery series set in the sort of small town where everybody knows each other (Donna Andrews' books are an exception to that). My suspension of disbelief doesn't work when there's murder after murder in a setting like that.

Recommendations welcome, but it would help if you tell me why I might like the book or author in question.
