Jan. 8th, 2015 07:41 amThere's no school today. They made the call rather late-- It was after 6:00 when my phone rang. Usually, they decide by 5:00 because some high school students leave home as early as 6:00. They said it was because of 'transportation difficulties.' I have no idea what that means. It's not the amount of snow. We haven't gotten any more of that over night; there's enough to notice but not enough to stop anybody driving. Judging by the National Weather Service site, it's not cold enough to prompt cancellation, either. I just don't know.
I do hope there's school tomorrow. I have an appointment I really can't afford to miss, and I don't want to try to get to that with three kids in tow. It is supposed to snow tonight, two to four inches with blowing and drifting, and the wind chill is predicted to get really nasty, possibly cold enough to close school and definitely cold enough to make the trip into town problematic.
Cordelia really enjoyed the independence of getting ready for school by herself yesterday. She has informed me that I no longer need to get up when she does. I don't know if I'll stop. Getting up at 7:00 is kind of helpful most days as it gives me more time in the morning to read or write or watch things. It's also important to get up then on Thursdays as I'm due at the school at 8:00 for my time in the school library. Then again, letting Cordelia get herself ready might be good preparation for high school. I won't want to get up with her then if there's a way out of it (there might not be. Her alarm wakes me up). Then again, in high school, at least at first, she's probably going to need some help getting out the door to the bus.
I am expecting the two usual extra kids today. I told their mother yesterday that, any time school was cancelled, I'd assume they were coming unless I heard otherwise from her. I haven't heard anything from her so far today, but yesterday, she confirmed that she would need to send her kids over here if school were cancelled.
I guess the box of books Cordelia no longer wants will have to sit for another week. I'm planning to donate those to the school library. The librarian may or may not want to add them to the collection, but even if she doesn't, she'll have a use for them. She was talking about wanting to be able to give books to kids some time later in the school year. The books in question are a mix of early reader chapter books and High School Musical books. Cordelia keeps finding more books she's outgrown. I've asked her to take the time to go through all of her books, but she doesn't want to do that.
I think I forgot to mention yesterday-- Cordelia and I went through her shirt drawer on Tuesday. We filled a trash bag with shirts that no longer fit or that she knows she won't wear. I think we're getting rid of a bit more than three quarters of what was in there. The remaining shirts fit the drawer easily, and it can now close. Of course, I'm not sure how well some of the remaining shirts actually fit. She didn't try them on, and I know she kept some medium sports team shirts (every season of Rec & Ed sports, each child gets a team shirt. They're pretty good quality and hold up through years of wearing) and got rid of some large sports team shirts. The mediums just barely fit now.
I've been thinking about my recs site again. I haven't touched it since some time in 2008. I have a couple of documents full of links to things I meant to add to the site and didn't get around to, but I haven't added to them in a couple of years, partly because I don't know that I'll do anything with the links and partly because I haven't been reading a lot of fic. It wouldn't be that hard to make small updates to the site. Maybe I could manage to post one new rec a day or something. It seems a pity not to use the links I've saved, and I had the impression that people used to use my recs site, once upon a time.
