Cordelia's friend and her brother came over yesterday after cross country. I had arranged with their mother that I'd feed them dinner and make sure they got to the school for the orchestra concert. It's just as well we did it that way-- The mother was on a bus that ran late so that she missed her connection and didn't get to the school until after the orchestra part of the concert was over. I feel bad for Cordelia's friend since it meant that neither of her parents were there (her father had to work late). I think Cordelia's friend's younger brother was a little worried by the lack of parents. We told him that, if neither of his parents were there by the end of the orchestra concert, he and his sister would be coming home with us. I don't know if that helped or not.

I fed the kids mac 'n' cheese and green beans. I had a lot of leftover chicken, too, but they didn't want that. We're going to have the same two kids for dinner on Friday, too, so I'm going to encourage Scott to cook the pork he bought this week tonight. I want to eat that and save the chicken. Cordelia's friends are Muslim, so I want the chicken for them. I know they'll probably want mac 'n' cheese again, but I'd like chicken as an option.

The kids left for the school at about 5:50. The girls had to be there by 6:00 and wanted to be sure to be on time. Scott and I waited for his parents who were later than they said they'd be, arriving at about 6:10. Fortunately, there were still seats when we got there. We ended up in the third row from the back which wasn't ideal, but hearing the kids play was more important than being able to see them (also, I forgot my glasses, so I couldn't tell one kid from another on stage).

I didn't wear the boot, my first time venturing out of the house without it since I broke my foot in March. The brace didn't fit particularly well in my shoe, so everything hurt the whole time, but I got by. I don't think it's going to be my favorite thing to do, and I'm unlikely to start wearing shoes around the house, but I can do it. I wasn't sure I could.

The fifth graders played first. There were a lot of them (about thirty, I think), and they played very simple things for the most part. A couple of kids who'd had lessons before fifth grade played more difficult solos.

The sixth graders played three songs that were considerably more difficult than what the fifth graders played. They played "Any Way You Want It," and a Tchaikovsky piece called "Finale," and something called "Battle of the Ancient Dragons" by Rob Grice. I don't think there were quite twenty sixth graders. The girl with the two broken wrists introduced each song. She told us something she liked about each and something she'd learned while learning to play each. (I assume that was an assignment from the teacher to make up for not being able to play. The concert was part of their final grade.)

Cordelia probably needs to go up a size in terms of her viola. Fortunately, that's pretty easy. We'll just go to the rental place and swap.

Cordelia wore my black loafers to the concert. She said they were a lot more comfortable than my navy blue dress shoes and that no one was going to be looking at her feet anyway. I was okay with it since it's not like I'm going to use my loafers any time soon. I can't possibly fit the brace into one of them, after all.

I still haven't picked which story to remix. Right at the moment, I'm leaning toward the dark one because of the mood I'm in and because my next choice involves sex and I'd have to decide what sort of sex and how the point of view character would react and all of that. That seems like more work just now. I'll start writing as soon as I've had lunch, and hopefully, I'll make enough progress to be able to tell if this is really the story I want to write.
