Dec. 13th, 2017 09:13 amI feel like I got a decent night's sleep last night for the first time in weeks, possibly months. My head doesn't hurt right now, and I think I might be able hold a conversation without getting tangled up and confused.
I'm not looking forward to this evening, though. Cordelia has two appointments, one at 4:30 and one at 5:45 (in the same building downtown). It being really cold is bad enough, but the current prediction is an accumulation of an inch of snow per hour after 10 a.m. Also, she and I will likely need to take the bus into town because it's likely that, by the time we know whether or not Scott can give us a ride in, the bus we need will have already gone.
That is, Cordelia gets home a little before 3:00. The bus passes near close to the half hour, and once we get downtown, we'll need to walk to the appointment. I think the downtown station is closer to the appointment than any other stop is. I'll check that, but the station is easier than spotting the sign for the stop at the right time to pull the cord. I want us to catch the 3:30 bus into town which will get us there about 3:50 if the roads are good. Cordelia prefers the 4:00 bus.
We won't need 40 minutes to get from the station to the appointment, but I'd rather have a cushion of 40 minutes in this weather than a cushion of 10. The bus might well run late enough to use up 10 minutes entirely. There is another bus line near us that runs into town. It runs every 15 minutes, but it has a couple of things against it-- There's a longish section of sidewalk between here and there that never gets shoveled because it's not owned by anyone the city can force to do it (I think it may be owned by the railroad). This other bus also takes longer to get downtown because it goes through medical and central campus on the way and generally tends to have more passengers at any given time of day than the first choice route.
At any rate, my to do list for today starts with finding my boots. I'm not going out in this weather with anything else on my feet even if Scott's able to drop us off. I've got a few little household chores to take care of, too. Then I'm going to spend some time watching the library DVD that's due tomorrow and can't be renewed (returning it tonight would be best). While I do that, I may try to answer some email/comments, but the movie's subtitled, so I may not be able to split my focus that way.
I also need to write and mail a check. I haven't made it to the bank yet to deal with the necessary money transfer (due mostly to the not being able to breathe while in cold air), but I promised to mail the check about ten days ago, so... Yeah. I need to do that and to get to the bank. Possibly, if Cordelia and I get downtown early enough, we could make a side trip there. I asked Cordelia to take the city bus from school and meet me downtown, but she hates the idea because that particular bus is always extremely crowded. I'm kind of surprised that they don't run extra buses on that route for school start and end times.
Then again, maybe they do. That particular bus's schedule is completely messed up on the website to the point that I can't find any sort of list of when buses stop there (I found a list that gave three times, one in the morning and two in the afternoon and insisted that there aren't any other buses but those, but I've ridden buses out there and home at other times, and so has Cordelia.
I need to find myself some slippers that fit and that don't make my feet feel nasty. I've been putting on socks and an old pair of shoes that I'm really not supposed to wear any more but can't afford to replace, but I keep forgetting to make sure I have accessible socks for right after I get up in the morning, so I end up spending two hours in bare feet most mornings.
We're trying to figure out what on earth to put in our stockings this year. Most years, we've just bought a lot of candy for all three of us and then given Cordelia some small things on top of that. This year, Cordelia doesn't want candy, and Scott and I are both thinking that, though we like it, having that much on hand wouldn't a great idea what with both of us having health problems that make the unadulterated sugar unwise. I really have no idea at all what to do about that. Scott's family tradition is to put in the biggest navel oranges they can find, and we do that because Scott can't quite see it as Christmas without, but most years, none of them get eaten because our experience is that they're dry and nasty.
The other part of the stocking thing is money. We really can't afford to go out and buy more than we already have. I suppose that the hairbows I've already bought for Cordelia would work in her stocking. If I take them out of the packaging. Maybe I could also start wrapping things today so that I can inventory what we have before it's too late to add to it.
At any rate, I asked Scott and Cordelia last night, and they both shrugged. They'll both be disappointed if we don't hang stockings at all, but I'm not sure what the point is.
Scott's brother has informed us that he and his family will not do their usual moving from place to place during the days they'll be in Michigan. In the past, it was a night or two in each of the three households. We don't know where they'll be staying apart from not here (we don't have room). Scott's sister's place would make some sense because she lives halfway between our place and Scott's parents' place. Her family also has multiple cars and drivers (I'm about 80% certain that they are not renting a car for this visit).
Due to the expected snow, we've preemptively cancelled tonight's game session. It will be a pity not to see folks, but if we get even half of what's predicted, it won't be safe. If we get all of what's predicted, there won't be school tomorrow.
