We've only played once, and we only won because we made a mistake with the rules-- We didn't remove cards from the deck after the corresponding tiles vanished into the abyss; that meant we had turns where nothing sank further.
But that does sound like the sort of thing that would naturally happen. I'm sure it's a corollary of some sort to Murphy's Law.
