Betting on a sebaceous cyst on your back, and it got inflamed/infected. If I'm right, it will recur in that same spot from time to time. I have one that's shown up so often, my husband calls it "Old Faithful." Mine don't get infected very often, but my scalp ones often get sore. The dermatologist says leave them alone unless they actually get infected (which it sounds as though your did).
(They can run in families; my late father had them too.)
