At this point, we don't know who will be on the school team (though it's a limited pool-- There are only 47 sixth graders, and boys generally don't play volleyball). There are four girls, including Cordelia, who I know have played before. One of those (the one Cordelia's closest to) won't play on the team because she's discouraged about how badly she plays.
Cordelia says that she wants to forgo playing on the team in order to help the girl who can't play well improve. I'm not sure how she plans to do that. The places out of doors where they might have practiced in years past are now part of a big construction project.
Cordelia's friendly with the other two girls who are likely to play. She's planning to attend a sleepover with one of them.
I do wonder, though, if Cordelia's worried that there won't be enough kids at her school to form a team. If there aren't, the kids who want to play will get bused to the nearest middle school to practice and have to find their own way home.
