It sounds like you have your screen brightness turned very low on your phone. This is reasonable -- I have my ipod maaaaaaaybe 1/8th power for use inside. If you're outside you'll probably need to increase that to about half or maybe more. That's the worst for eating battery, so I've learned to do it when I can't see the damn thing, and only do it when I must.
