At least the nightgown wouldn't have to be beautiful... just serviceable. :) You could almost cut it to about the waist and have someone put bias tape around the edge to keep it from unraveling -- the extra weight of the bias tape might keep it from bunching up as much too. Your MIL would be the best source for you though as to what she feels comfortable doing.
But we've exhausted most of my sewing knowledge right there. I make pillows and I can handsew. I can do piping, basic repair, and I'm trying to commit to making a simple quilt someday. Winter months would be best for that.
