Today is my grandmother's birthday. I actually remembered to call this year. I need to call her more often. I've got the minutes on my cell phone plan. I should use them.
She sounds like she's doing well. She's slowed down quite a bit, and she can't drive any more. Her mind is still pretty sharp though, and she's living independently. Two of her children live within a short drive, and one of my cousins and his family does as well. They check up on her every day. I'm grateful for that.
Grandma did have some family news. I hadn't realized that my youngest sister was due to graduate college this year (I could have counted years if I'd thought to). She's been going to, I think, Barnard and hopes to find a job in New York so that she can stay in the city. I don't even know what her major is. Tomorrow is her birthday, and I don't have an address or phone number for her. I've got to remedy that. I should call her mother and ask.
My father's sister isn't doing very well. Her lungs are giving out. Grandma says she's under hospice care, not because they expect her to die soon (though she could) but because she needs expensive equipment at home and hospice is supervising its use. She and her husband are both heavy smokers, so lung trouble doesn't come as a big surprise.
Saturday is my father's birthday. I hope I remember to call him.
