I promise I'll update with real content some time next week, after the LARP is finally over. I'll probably start writing a summary of the last month before then, but I probably won't finish it before then. In the mean time...

This meme went around a few weeks ago, and it intrigued me then. I started in on it while I was too sick to work on the LARP but didn't finish it. Now that the LARP's ready too run and I'm just waiting for tomorrow afternoon to run it, I thought I see if I could finish (I gave up on digging through "Rheotaxis" looking for better lines, and that's decreased the work involved). In a couple of places, I've given more than one sentence because I couldn't find a single sentence that worked alone as something interesting. I've also pulled more than one sentence from a couple of very long projects. In some cases, it's because I couldn't choose between them, and in others, it's because the work is so long that I felt justified in treating the sections as separate works. Most of these stories have been in progress for years, but rereading them to pick out sentences has made me itch to go back and work on some of them. "Rheotaxis" is first priority, followed most likely by "Etiolation," but... I hope I can find time to expand on some of the others.

If you happen to be working on some creative writing project, fanfiction or NaNoWriMo or what have you, post exactly one sentence from each of your current work(s) in progress in your journal. It should probably be your favourite or most intriguing sentence so far, but what you choose is entirely your discretion. Mention the title (and genre) if you like, but don't mention anything else. This is merely to whet the general appetite for your forthcoming work(s).

I'm not sure which made me less comfortable, his words or the way he leaned back in the chair as if he owned my kitchen. My kitchen! I guess territoriality was easier than self preservation.

Etiolation (epic Ruroni Kenshin AU)
Incomplete intelligence sabotages as many operations as failure of nerve or lack of skill, and I found myself facing an unexpected variable impinging on my carefully planned scenario through a gap I should have noticed. Shinomori Aoshi, sometime Okashira of the Oniwabanshu.

The malice in the other man's words seemed to crawl over his skin, and he wanted to shake himself to keep it from clinging.

The Battousai broke my purpose, splintered it to dust, then offered words that melted on my tongue like honey sweets. Hope in place of purpose. A fair trade. A cheat. The strongest is not the most cunning. I should have remembered.

Black Tide (original story)
He wasn't comfortable with the notion that he simply was. He needed to think that he had a story, that he wasn't just one of those natural quirks to which the world is prone.

Untitled original story
Climbing fences with a purse is bad enough, but doing it while carrying a flowerpot…

Arnold (working title. I'll come up with a better one later)
It finally dawned on me that she didn't have any more idea what to do with me as a vampire than I did. Just my luck-- I got turned into a vampire by an amateur.

Flavia (Working title. Companion piece to Arnold)
Just before I went over, I heard the sound of Marko's feet behind me. I sobbed and ended up with lungs full of water. His gait hadn't changed; it still had the sound I remembered from a childhood of races that he'd always let a slower, smaller child win.

Some people have called my fear of the water irrational. I disagree. Let them spend time with it as I have done and then let them tell me that it is not to be feared.

Calypso and Chimera (Working title)
He didn't think she'd shoot at this point; she didn't need to waste the ammunition, and the hotel's manager had almost certainly asked politely that she keep the damage down.

She staggered toward the doorway herself, trying not to wonder just how she was going to get herself and two kids out of the complex, even leaving aside the fact that one of the kids glowed and was followed by flowers and drums.

Untitled original story
He'd been stabbing at the paper with his pen, trying to make the figures before him come out right. Unfortunately, numbers on paper simply weren't amenable to physical coercion.

Rheotaxis (Weiss Kreuz fanfic)
It's so much easier to play the attitude with the props to help, and I don't even fucking have clothes.

Another meme that could be fun taken from [livejournal.com profile] splash_the_cat:

If there is any question you would like to ask me about any one of my fics, then go ahead! What I meant by a particular line, why I chose that characterisation, what I was listening to as I wrote, what crack I was taking and where you can get some ... anything. Anything you might like to know about how I wrote a fic, I shall do my best to answer.

I've only got "Rheotaxis," really, but if you want to ask questions about any of the other things I posted snippets of, feel free.
