I wish my headaches came with easy signals so that I'd know what's causing them. Maybe hoisting different colored banners-- Purple for lack of sleep. Gray for dehydration. Green for low blood sugar. Orange for menstrual. Blue for sinus. Black for tension. White for fever. Pink for medication side effects. Make the banners striped for combinations and add something for a pay-attention-now! alert so I know when I need to see a doctor.
As it is, I often don't figure out what the problem is until the headache is over. Headaches make me stupid and disinclined to do anything which doesn't make figuring out the problem any easier.
Yesterday, I was supposed to go from 25 mg of Provigil once a day to 25 mg of Provigil twice a day, about four hours apart. I didn't do it because I got hit with a mild migraine (I call it 'mild' because I could still walk and talk). Increasing the dose of a medication that's given me side effects seems singularly stupid when I was already sick.
After I beat back the migraine, I had vertigo for the rest of the day. That's not normal for me. I do get very occasional vertigo, but it usually hits when I'm in bed, flat on my back, with my eyes closed. At those times, it's actually kind of neat because I'm in no danger. Feeling like I'm on the ceiling or spinning gently isn't bad when I'm not trying to do anything else and know I don't have to move. Plus, it goes away when I open my eyes.
Last night, my eyes were part of the problem. Scott walked by too fast at one point, and I had to cover my face and lie down. Any time I shifted the position of my head, I had to wait a few seconds to get over the dizziness. I took meclizine. That helped the visual part of things. Sleeping helped enough that I didn't feel a need to try to rush to UHS this morning (I'll ask the neurologist/migraine specialist tomorrow).
I'm still a little off. I've taken Sudafed and mucinex and have been pouring in the fluids. Nothing's gotten any worse. As near as I can figure out yesterday's migraine was menstrual. I've been having sinus troubles at this point in my cycle for the last six months to a year. Right now, I'm assuming that this is the same problem, just more so.
It does remind me that I need to call UHS to schedule a physical and, if I can't get a physical before the end of the year, to schedule an appointment to renew my maintenance medication prescriptions. I've been putting it off because I'm frustrated with my doctor but also unwilling to deal with trying to switch to someone else.
