For my brother, his attitudes seem to combine the notions that everybody ought to feel constantly depressed because the world sucks, that most people lie to themselves in order to pretend to be happy so that the unhappy are the only sensible, honest, realistic ones and that everyone would be happy if they didn't put any value on physical comfort, personal possessions or anything else impermanent (and everything's impermanent by his definition).
I find it a not very coherent and highly juvenile set of beliefs. There's nothing virtuous about misery. I interpret his real message as 'I'm not happy, so that must be normal. Everybody should be more like me.'
