The local schools closed today due the very cold weather. The policy is that, if it hits -20 F including the wind chill, they close. They made the decision by five o'clock this morning. I'd known it was likely, so I checked the website after Scott's alarm went off and then turned off my alarm and Cordelia's.

Cordelia got up about eight-thirty. Fifteen minutes later, at the time I'd normally be dropping her at the school, we got two phone calls in quick succession. The first was from the mother of the little girl with whom Cordelia is scheduled to have an afternoon playdate. The other mother wanted to let me know that she could pick Cordelia up for it. The second was from a mother who lives about a block from us. She'd missed hearing that there wasn't school and was panicking because she couldn't get her car started (she has a not yet walking younger child, and the sidewalks aren't currently stroller passable) to take her daughter to school. She was very relieved to hear that she didn't need to bother.

Cordelia's off on her playdate. I have a friend's four year old son here this afternoon as his pre-school is closed due to being attached to the public school system. I've watched him once before, but that was for a very brief time, about an hour. Today, it will be four hours, and I expect I'll get to know more about him. I also suspect that I'll resort to PBS hypnosis for a good chunk of that time as I've already got a headache that's resisting everything I throw at it (all I haven't tried yet is relaxants/sedatives, and I won't do that when I'm at home with a kid. Better to have a headache and be reasonably sure of my judgment and alertness levels than to tinker with those to get rid of the pain).

Right now, I'm trying to come up with a list of things I should get done today that I also might be able to do with B here. Let's see....

1) Run a load of laundry. I want my bathrobe to be clean and dry.

2) If I can get the clean laundry up the stairs, sort and start putting it away.

3) Write the episode summary that I need to post tomorrow for the Weiss Kreuz rewatch on [livejournal.com profile] wk_fic_finds. I should probably watch the episode at least once more to come up with questions, but I think I can write the summary now.

4) See if I can figure out how to do a screen cap for that post and decide what image fits best.

5) Rewrite my Yuletide fic then format it for posting on my website.

6) Rewrite the fics I've written for [livejournal.com profile] fandom_stocking, give them titles and format them for posting on my website. I've got two short fics, one fragment that didn't quite work and an almost 3000 word fic that I wrote a week too late to give it to the person whose request inspired it. Anybody free to beta a short Vorkosigan fic or a Harry Potter/Belgariad crossover or a Harry Potter/Sandman/xxxHOLIC crossover today or some time this weekend? I don't think the tiny Weiss fragment is ready for beta reading at this point. It might be later. Maybe.

7) Empty and load the dishwasher.

8) Read some library books. The manga are fast reads, and I'd like to return them.

9) Write up and format some fic recs for my website. Actually putting them into the appropriate files for posting would be an extra good thing. I'm a couple of years behind.

10) Post all the updates to my website.

11) Edit and weed and label the long, long list of urls I've got saved. I think they're mostly for fics I meant to read, recs I meant to follow and so on, but I no longer know. I need to sort those urls into categories.

12) Order birthday presents for my niece and nephew. Yesterday was the niece's birthday, and I don't want the present to be dreadfully late. I hit two snags on buying for her. The first was a normal thing that I always have to conquer-- a sneaking anxiety about making the decision and spending the money. The second was tougher. Her father had said that she really likes dolls, and I remembered how much Cordelia enjoyed paper dolls around her fifth birthday (which this is for the niece). When I looked on Amazon, though, I kept rejecting options. Our niece is biracial. Her father is white, and her mother is Chinese-American. I wanted to find a decent paper doll that looked somewhat like her *and* had clothes like what she wears and what people around her wear. I found nothing at all. The closest I could come was dolls with fancy, very regional, very special occasion, very foreign outfits. I wouldn't have minded combining one like that with one that had clothes like what she's used to. At any rate, I think I'm giving up on the paper dolls. We asked around and got some suggestions for regular dolls.

Buying for my nephew will be easier. He's turning two, and I've promised my sister Backyardigans CDs. I just have to get myself to the point of placing the order.

With some luck, ticking things off the list will help the headache. I think that part of what I've got right now is Impending Doom sense. I think the episode summary and the birthday presents need to be first priority as they're the most time sensitive and the most likely to inspire guilt stress.

Oh, and I do thank you all for the input on the question of the mini cheesecake. I think I'm going to throw it out. I'm too scared to eat it. I'll probably do that first thing. I don't want Cordelia to see me do it, and she's not here right now.
