I'm glad you found something that will do. I agree that the uncomfortable waistline and length are problematic, but I don't think you're "too old and fat to wear something cut like this." (That's anxiety talking. It sounds just like mine.) Scott and Valerie saw you in it, and thought it looked good.
A silk scarf, worn over one's shoulders like a shawl, can make a person feel somewhat less exposed. Or you could just wear your hair down...I know that would *feel* exposed, but your hair covers quite a lot.
