Oct. 15th, 2012 02:59 pmScott's father went in for surgery at seven o'clock this morning. From what I gather the plan was to work as long as his body could tolerate, doing as many bypasses as they could squeeze in. Scott called about one-thirty to say that his dad was in recovery. We don't know yet how much they succeeded in doing or what sort of improvement in heart function that will translate to. Scott's mother said the other day that the surgeon was hoping to get Scott's father's heart up to at least thirty percent efficiency.
Scott's brother and his wife are in Florida now and will stay through Thursday. We were worried that our sister-in-law would discover that the hospital and/or the surgeon weren't up to snuff, but she was able to reassure us on both counts. If she hadn't been satisfied, it's likely the surgery would have been delayed while they got Scott's father transferred to another hospital. I'm glad they could stay where they were and with the surgeon they started with. Scott's mother really liked the surgeon because he is a Christian and asked them to pray with him.
Scott's sister will be going down to Florida Thursday or Friday. I don't know how long she'll stay. When she leaves, Scott will go down. Scott's brother wants their parents to fly home and have their car shipped somehow (or maybe have Scott drive it to Michigan). Scott wasn't sure his parents could afford that.
Right now, I'm assuming that Scott won't be available for UCon and possibly not for Halloween either. My first choice to replace Scott at the LARP can't do it due to a scheduling conflict (but can help out with Halloween if need be). I have a couple of other people I can ask. I just have to get my act together and ask. Anybody local interested in running combat for a LARP on the 27th of this month?

Date: 2012-10-15 07:14 pm (UTC)I won't lie, my expression when I read that was o.O
Also when I read

I went O.O because, wow, I'm glad it reassures her, but I would be out the door.
In any case, I hope his recovery goes better than expected and that logistics work out for the family. I'm kinda doubting that Scott's father will be cleared to fly for quite a while...

Date: 2012-10-15 08:26 pm (UTC)My MIL was thanking God for sending them a Christian doctor. It mattered that much to her. To be fair to him, he asked them first if they had a particular religion. It was after they said yes and specified that they're Methodists that he asked about praying. I'm not sure I consider it an appropriate part of a surgeon's job, but people at hospitals do ask about religion/faith so that they can make sure that the patient has access to appropriate rites, ministerial visitation and so on.
It's going to be a challenge. We need to get them back to Michigan as soon as possible. They can't stay in Florida. They have no support system there. If we can get them back to Michigan, there are plenty of people who will help with housework, shopping, doctors visits, etc. I'd think that a two to three hour flight would be better than three or four days on the road in a car.
