Oct. 21st, 2012 02:56 pmDelia has discovered that Netflix has iCarly available streaming. She watched about half a dozen episodes just this morning. Delia's TV watching has forced me to thicken my skin a bit about sitcoms. I can't tolerate them, under most circumstances, because embarrassment humor repels me. Delia, however, loves them. This means that Scott and I are up on the latest Disney sitcoms and are starting to become familiar with Nickelodeon sitcoms. We actually had opinions when it came to the end of Wizards of Waverly Place and the characters were competing to see which of the three kids would get to keep their magic powers.
The cancelled soccer game has been reschedule to the first Saturday in November at nine in the morning. I expect I'll want my long, down coat for that one. We're fortunate that it doesn't conflict with that day's volleyball game. There should be about an hour between games, plenty of time to get from one place to the other. I will have to make inquiries about getting rides to both games, though. Scott will still be in Florida that day.
The good news for me about Scott's Florida trip is that he's not leaving until after the UCon LARP. That's a great relief. It means, too, that Delia can go to her volleyball game. She's not sure she wants to go because she's never played an actual game yet. I think she suspects she won't be very good at it. That should be fine. None of the kids are likely to be very good. There may be some kids with some experience because the teams include both fourth and fifth graders, but a lot of kids will be just like Delia, entirely new to the game.
Scott's father is out of the ICU. From what Scott's mother says, they may let him leave the hospital soon. She's anticipating that they'll be in Florida at least another six weeks. She's also putting her foot down with Scott's father. He wants to drive back to Michigan. She wants to fly and have the car shipped somehow. She thinks, probably quite correctly, that the days long trip would be more of a strain than her husband ought to undertake.
Scott's looking into plane tickets now that he knows when he's going to need to travel. If he flies out of Metro, there's a shuttlebus from downtown Ann Arbor that he could take and so avoid paying for parking at the airport. On the other hand, if he flies out of Flint, he can get a direct flight to an airport quite close to where his parents are (as opposed to flying to Tampa and driving at least an hour). We don't know what either flight will cost, and that'll be a factor as well.
Delia's soccer game yesterday went well. It was cold, and the sky was overcast, so watching the game wasn't that much fun. Delia's team won by a considerable margin (none of us could remember the exact score. Delia's team had at least five goals, maybe more). Scott was really pleased because he thought that some of the girls on the opposing team were quite large. He kind of expected them to use that size advantage and run over Delia's team.
We all three got flu shots at Walgreen's after the soccer game. Scott and I usually go to Kroger, but Kroger won't do shots for anyone under the age of fourteen, and we wanted Delia to get a shot as well. Walgreen's does them for ages seven and up. In years past, I've taken Delia to her pediatrician for the shot, but that's really hard because it involves pulling her out of school and taking her on a bus ride. She doesn't want to go and so drags her feet and complains the whole way. Usually, Delia cries and screams at the shot, but this year she didn't. She really didn't want the shot, but afterward, she said it hardly hurt at all.
We took her to Barnes & Noble to buy her a book as a reward for being brave. She ended up getting a math workbook and Shannon Hale's Princess Academy. Scott picked up a couple of graphic novels. I didn't buy anything. I've got too many unread books sitting around to justify buying more. (This is not even counting the three hundred or so books I have on my things to try from the library list. Thank goodness the library started up a service letting people make and keep online lists.)

Date: 2012-10-23 04:29 pm (UTC)Thank goodness Scott's father is doing better. If you do end up needing rides this weekend, my offer to do some driving is still open, but I'm glad that things are looking up with Scott's dad.
Have you or Delia read "Princess Academy"? Kendra and I each read it some time ago, and liked it. It's definitely not what I expected from a book with "Princess" in its name. Also, I just recently finished reading Shannon Hale's book "Goose Girl." Kendra and I both really liked that one too. Kendra told me that "Goose Girl" has sequels, so we've requested those from the library. And she's used her allowance money to pre-order her own copy of "Princess Academy 2." I too love the library website's Wish List feature. I used to request books that I wanted to read someday and then repeatedly renew them forever, until I got around to reading them. Now I put them on my wish list instead, which takes up much less space at my house and lets other people have access to them until I'm ready to read them. :)

Date: 2012-10-23 10:17 pm (UTC)Scott's father still isn't out of the hospital, but he spoke to Scott a little bit on the phone. Scott's mother keeps hoping that they'll let him leave, and then one more difficulty will pop up.
Neither Delia nor I have read Princess Academy. I think I tried to once but bounced off it. I'm not completely sure, though. Delia prefers to read books that I've never read. I think there's some sort of mystique to it.
Barnes & Noble had the second Princess Academy book on the shelf when we were there on Saturday. Delia almost bought it. She was going to until I pointed out that it's the second book in the series and that she might want to start with the first.
I like the wishlist feature at the library, too. I've got about half a dozen different lists. There's my wish list. There's my books to read when I get around to them list. There's books on CD for Scott to try. There's a list of DVDs. Then there are lists of authors to check for future books and series to check for the next book coming out.
