Scott canceled his Babylon 5 game this week. He felt he had too much that needed to be done, and several of the players needed to skip the session as well.

Last night was the school's annual international dinner. That's a potluck where families bring foods representative of their culture to share. Some people even dressed up in clothing from other countries. Delia and I went, but Scott didn't make it (He can't safely eat at a potluck, anyway, so there was no rush for him to join us). We took banana bread, as usual. It always gets eaten, it's easy to make, and I can get a couple dozen half slices out of a loaf. There was a performance after the meal. The local middle school has a group of drummers, and they performed. Delia and I stayed for about twenty minutes of drumming then called it a night. We got back to the house just as Scott was coming out the door to head to the school.

The preparations for the LARP tomorrow are done. We're short on green index cards, but I think we have enough to get through. I used our green card stock to make some extras. I'm not convinced I know the game as thoroughly as I should. It's not that I haven't had time. I simply haven't known where to start. I have to decide whether or not I'm taking my laptop with me to the convention. It could be useful, but it's also one more thing to carry (and something I can't leave lying around for fear someone will walk off with it).

The plan is for Scott and Delia to drop me at the convention first. Then they'll pick up something for lunch on the way to Delia's volleyball game. The volleyball game ends at 1:30. The LARP starts at 2:00. I'm expecting to be doing the initial stuff, including explaining the rules, before Scott arrives.

Delia is uncertain about the volleyball game. She kind of wants to play and kind of wants to get out of playing. Some of it is uncertainty about how to play, I suspect. She asked me last night if I thought she'd play well. I made reassuring noises. I think it's going to be interesting because, unlike soccer and basketball, there's no way to rely heavily on other players to do the work. Delia tends to hesitate with the ball in soccer and basketball and not to be very aggressive. With volleyball, there are going to be four players on the court, each with a specific area to cover and each having to back the others up rapidly.

We're getting our front and back doors replaced with pre-hung doors on Wednesday. Scott really wants to get it done before winter. The current doors don't hang right, and the frames are crooked. The new doors ought to seal much better and be easier to open and close. It's supposed to be pretty cold on Wednesday, so I'm wondering how I'll manage in the house with a door gaping open for however long the process takes. This whole thing also means the screen doors will be off until after Scott gets back from Florida. Having the folks installing the doors put the screen doors back on cost a good bit more money, so Scott decided to do it himself. I hope he can find a day when it's not too dreadfully cold. November in Michigan isn't the most welcoming time for such work.

Scott leaves Monday morning and comes back the following Sunday. I think Delia and I will be fine. I can get to the grocery store by bus if there's something we can't live without, and none of my prescriptions absolutely have to be refilled until Sunday (I'll run out of Wellbutrin Monday while Scott's at work, so it really must be filled on Sunday). Scott should be back early enough in the day to pick up the prescription.

Scott's father is out of the hospital now. Scott's even gotten to talk to him on the phone a little. Scott's father is still pretty weak, and it's too soon to know how much good the surgery has done for him. I don't know how Scott's mother is going to manage after Scott comes home. She said she anticipates being stuck in Florida at least until the end of November.

Scott's parents being in Florida for so long means Scott, Delia and I will be on our own for Thanksgiving. I'm trying to figure out what foods are essential for Thanksgiving without overwhelming the three of us with food. For me, it's turkey, stuffing and sweet potatoes. Scott would substitute home made chicken and noodles for the sweet potatoes. I can ask his mother for the noodle recipe, but I'm not sure of my ability to make it. I suppose we ought to have a green vegetable, too. It'll seem weird just having the three of us. I'll invite my brother, but it's a two hour drive for him, and Thanksgiving is a busy night for him at work. He delivers pizza.

Aww, I am sure Delia will do fine at volleyball! If I were closer I'd totally offer to come practice with her, I love seeing kids get into it early (most places don't have it until 6th or 7th grade at the earliest).

I hope Scott's father continues improving, and I'm sorry it'll be a smaller Thanksgiving than usual. It's often just 3 for Thanksgiving at my place, and this year it's 2, so we plan for things-that-make-good-leftovers. Veggie-wise, green beans with a little oil&garlic and some almonds are good reheated or cold the next day, and carrots in honey warm up very nicely too.
