Scott and Delia recently finished reading The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. I was afraid she'd reject the book when it came to the point when Aslan is killed. She's rejected books for less before (We may never manage The Secret Garden because the parents die in the first chapter). Fortunately, it was a night when we'd gotten her into bed relatively early, so Scott had time to read the next chapter, too, to get her past the scary bit.

They're working on Prince Caspian now and will probably do all of the Narnia books. I don't know what will come after that because Scott wants to stick with things he's read. I have suggestions, and other people have made suggestions, but Scott hasn't read those books. That complicates matters considerably. Maybe Delia will let me start reading to her again.

I used to be afraid of the The Secret Garden for the same reasons Delia was; give it a year or so and try again. It really is such a lovely story (not that I need to tell you that!) :)

Maybe try A Little Princess instead? (There's death, but it's off-page.)

Man, I had forgotten the deaths. I suppose you could start with Mary arriving at the Hall, instead, though. The first chapter is not totally integral to the book.

Has Scott thought about reading some of the suggested books? Usually, kids books are pretty quick reads, after all.

I wonder if Scott would listen to them as books-on-tape in the car.

I've also had good luck with downloading free recorded books off the Internet. There's a project called LibriVox (at librivox.org ), where volunteers read books that are in the public domain. We listened to their recording of "A Little Princess," when we were on vacation last summer, and really enjoyed it. And I've got "Heidi" waiting on my computer for some future vacation. Originally I was saving these audiobooks to CD (which is an annoyingly slow process), but now I've realized that I can just save them on my phone, like music, and then plug my phone into my car's radio and play it directly. So next summer I plan to do that.

I don't know if you'd find the books you want to there, but maybe at least some of them might be around.

Also, I know the local public library just started making music available for download. I wonder if they've got any audiobooks that are available that way.

Anyway, I have no idea if any of these ideas would work -- but I love how many possibilities there are.
