Dec. 2nd, 2011 01:54 pmHow did it get to be December? I was barely aware of it being November and definitely don't feel ready for that month to be over yet. There's so much to do, and I'm not prepared for any of it.
I expect I'll feel more ready after I get over this cold. It's been going around. Just about everyone we know has had it (except Delia. I don't know if she'll escape or if she's just late in getting it). Scott brought the cold home. We assume he must have picked it up at work because we can't think where else he'd have gotten it. I caught it from him. My case has been milder than his, thank goodness. He's still coughing pretty constantly, but I only cough at night.
I came down with the cold the Monday before Thanksgiving. Delia only had school on Monday and Tuesday, so I made arrangements for her to spend time with
cherydactyl's younger daughter. The original plan was for them to be over here, but after I got sick
cherydactyl offered to have Delia over there. I accepted because it would let me nap.
We spent Thanksgiving at Scott's parents' place. We brought bread and an apple pie. Scott and our brother-in-law and nephew played a long game of Betrayal at the House on the Hill (at least, I think that's the name of the game). Scott has owned it for a while but never previously got to play it. We need to figure out a way to get people to come over to play games with him. This whole not knowing until Friday whether or not he'll have Saturday off has gotten old.
Some of us played a couple of rounds of Whonnu (I'm not sure I'm spelling that right). That and Apples to Apples are among the very few games I can play without panicking. I think that's because there is no right thing to do when playing them, no strategy, nothing complicated. I can also play Uno most of the time and can manage some very simple card games that I learned when I was very young.
My in-laws had brined the turkey, so it was very moist. I didn't really care for the way the sweet potatoes were spiced, and I skipped the beet salad (that was more because it never made it around the table to me than because I didn't want it, but if it had been something else, I have asked to have it passed). There were three kinds of pie after dinner, and I had a small bit of each, chocolate, pumpkin and apple.
The day after Thanksgiving, there wasn't much going on. We called around a little, trying to find a friend who could come and visit Delia, but we had no luck.
Saturday was our niece's birthday party. That started at three, so I had time to do most of the laundry before we left. Besides Delia and our niece, there was only one other girl at the party. The three of them ran around outside (it was relatively warm), played together in the basement, and generally had fun. At one point, there was a large game of Apples to Apples, Jr. going on in the basement. I came to that late and took over someone else's hand when they had to go do something else. Scott, our brother-in-law, our nephew and our nephew's friend played a long game of Betrayal at the House on the Hill (I seriously was starting to think that the game would never end).
Sunday, Scott and Delia went to see The Muppets with Scott's sister, her kids and her in-laws. Delia had serious reservations about going. She cried and almost decided not to go. She was afraid that there'd be scary previews again (she had one really bad experience a couple of years ago-- a preview for that Tim Burton animated post-apocalyptic thing about dolls). She actually wrote up a plan for making the whole thing work-- She planned that she and Scott would stay outside of the theater until the previews were over, with Scott checking occasionally to see whether or not they were done. From what I gather, that's pretty much what they did. Our nephew came out to let them know when the previews were over. Delia seems to have liked the movie very much and is glad she went. Unfortunately, I think we're going to refight this battle every time she goes to the movies.
After the movie, we went to Sears to buy boots for Delia. I'd been worried that it would snow before we got boots because we no longer have last year's too small pair. The boots we got were more expensive than we'd hoped, but Delia loves them. They're silver with white lining and laces. We also found a jacket for Scott. He needed one because I've appropriated his middle weight jacket for my own use (I had a windbreaker and a huge down coat, with nothing in between. The jacket that used to be Scott's has a decently thick lining for those times when it's too cold for just a windbreaker but not yet cold enough for the full battlesuit). We stopped for bubble tea on the way home, and I enjoyed that a lot.
Monday, it was back to the routine.
Tuesday, Delia had rock climbing. They did bouldering this week. She says she likes that better than climbing with the harness. There are only two sessions left of the camp. After that, it may be years before she climbs again. It's expensive, not very conveniently located, and neither Scott nor I have the training to help her do it safely.
While Delia was rock climbing, Scott and I went out to dinner. It was our first time out without the girl in many, many months. I don't remember the name of the place, but it was relatively fancy-- $20 entrees level of fancy which is something for us when we usually eat a Applebee's or Olga's. After we ate, we ran out to Meijer's for distilled water. I also bought some knee socks (the pants I wear under my dresses and the Hanes socks I wear are too short to meet each other, so I end up with bare skin between my socks and my pants. The knee socks are an experiment. Right now, I have mixed feelings. They're thin enough that I might as well not be wearing them, but they look much better).
Tuesday night, I slept really badly. I'm not sure I slept at all. Dinner was a bit too heavy and wasn't sitting right. I know all the insomnia guides say to get up when one can't sleep, but I always figure that I'm at least resting when I lie there. I can get to the state of almost falling asleep without quite making it to sleep.
Wednesday, Scott had to work late. He let me know about 3:30, not long after he found out. That meant that his Babylon 5 game had to be cancelled. It might have had to be cancelled anyway because he's still coughing so much (and because I was in a bad way from the lack of sleep), but we'll never know. I got Delia home, fed and back to school for basketball practice.
While she was at practice, I wrote a bit of my Yuletide fic. That's progressing less well than I'd like, but it is progressing, and there's still time. I wish my recipient's request hadn't been quite so specific. I'm really afraid that I won't manage to fulfill it. I know that optional details are optional, but it's better to give a story that fits what's desired.
When Scott works late, his after work routine bumps hard into Delia's getting ready for bed routine. He usually comes home and heads straight for the bathroom. He'll be in there for about an hour, showering, shaving, doing whatever it is that he does. When he works late, he gets home no earlier than 7:30, and Delia needs the bathroom for getting ready for bed at 8:00. We managed to negotiate it this time, but I wasn't sure we were going to be able to manage it gracefully.
We're continuing to work on Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire with Delia. She's enjoying it so far, but the difficult parts haven't come up yet. I suppose we'll see. She's determined to read the whole series now because there are kids in her class who have done so. She doesn't want to be left behind.
Time to go bake. I have a mix from Trader Joe's for an apple spice bread. We've had the mix for about a month, and I haven't gotten to it yet. I hope it proves to be tasty.
