Oct. 12th, 2012 10:19 amI posted this to DreamWidth, but it doesn't seem to have crossposted. If it shows up a second time, later, I apologize.
The news about Scott's father isn't good. They're doing more tests today and over the weekend. On Monday, he's scheduled for bypass surgery of some sort, probably multiple bypasses. Scott's brother's wife, the vascular surgeon, says the procedure carries a high risk of complications. I'm not sure what all of this means in concrete terms, but I don't like the sound of it.
We've told Delia that her grandfather is in the hospital. She talked to him for a little bit last night, and Scott had the phone on speakerphone when his mother talked about the upcoming surgery, so she has some information. I don't think she understands the implications at all, and I'm not eager to explain.
Scott's brother is planning to fly to Florida as soon as he can. His wife may or may not be accompanying him. I suspect it depends on what surgeries she's got scheduled and on what arrangements they can make for the kids. They have a nanny, but she's not normally there all the time.
Scott's sister will go down when Scott's brother has to leave. Scott will go down when his father is sufficiently recovered to handle the drive back to Michigan. Scott will do all the driving on that return trip. This means that he'll have to cancel the time off he scheduled for UCon. He'll need to be flexible about when he takes those five days. Hopefully work will be accommodating, and hopefully he'll have a couple of weeks notice.
Scott being gone will be complicated for me and Delia. We'll try to do as much as possible so that we don't need to do any shopping or prescription pickup during those days, and we should be able to get someone to drive us to any volleyball games that occur. The biggest hitch may be UCon. If Scott's gone then, Delia and I will have a real challenge. I'm not sure how we'll get to the con, and Delia will have to choose between her volleyball game and the con. There won't be a way to do both. I'll also have to find someone else to run combat for the LARP. I'm trying to think who I know who knows our system well enough to do that. I don't know.
Of course, all of this assumes that Scott's father makes it through the surgery and its aftermath. He might not. I'd rather not think about that.

Date: 2012-10-12 04:35 pm (UTC)I'd volunteer us to get you to U*Con, but I think we'll be mostly there for the auction, since Bruce has to work Friday/Saturday Saturday/Sunday nights, from eleven pm to eight am.

Date: 2012-10-15 12:33 pm (UTC)I do really appreciate the offer, but I'll understand if you'd rather not undertake a drive that might be twenty minutes to half an hour each way.
Of course, if you and members of your family are planning to go to UCon anyway, that changes everything. Arlo is old enough to play PlotLuck now if it's something that would interest him.

Date: 2012-10-17 09:48 pm (UTC)I may well take you up on this. We don't know yet when Scott's going down to Florida, but the most likely timeline has him leaving on the 26th and, so, missing UCon. Scott needs to talk to his mother to figure out when his five vacation days will do the most good. His siblings don't want to leave their parents alone down there, but none of them are willing/able to stay more than a week or to go down there a second time, and their parents will be alone after Scott's five days are up.
