Last Week pt.2
Mar. 6th, 2002 10:49 amSaturday was the third session of my new Amber game. I finally got all of the characters together in one place. Lisa (the player who's there because her boyfriend is) had a cold and so asked not to have to talk much, so I didn't have to work at getting her more involved. I'm hoping that having her character in position to meet everybody next session will help with the problem. After that session, we went over to Matt's for his Vampire game. Our characters made some serious progress gathering information and attempting to resolve some political problems. I'm looking forward to the next session because I expect that to be a big session for intrigue which is what I enjoy most in role playing.
Sunday was also full. Our nephew Brendan's third birthday was Sunday, and his parents hosted a party from 1-3 pm. Not counting his little sister, Kayla, there were four other kids there with associated adults. It was pretty simple. Presents first, then cake, followed by a piñata that took forever to break (the oldest child was five, and she was the only one out of diapers). The cake was quite impressive; Suzanne had done it up in the shape of a string of train cars. I didn't have any, but I didn't feel particularly deprived. I was more protein hungry at that point than sugar hungry.
Scott and I both got to hold Kayla for a little. I got more time than Scott because, as soon as I passed her over to him, Suzanne decided that it was diaper changing time. I don't know that there was a causal connection between the two, however. Kayla was a sweetheart and didn't fuss about getting passed from person to person. She just waved her hands, kicked a bit and drooled a lot. During the piñata breaking, Suzanne put her in one of those swinging seats, and that put her to sleep in spite of the noise. A couple of people tried to get pictures of her there but were frustrated by the helium filled balloon tied to the seat that created a moving shadow on her face.
There were an awful lot of cameras present, not quite one per adult but close. Scott played around a bit with the digital camera his brother gave to Suzanne (for Christmas I believe). Suzanne can't download the images because her computer's too old; she needs new hardware and software to make it work. Scott borrowed the camera to take pictures of the bar in our basement (yes, we're going to try again to sell it. This time, we're going to put the images on my web space so that people can look at them before calling us) and downloaded all of the pictures they'd already taken onto a CD. At any rate, Scott took pictures at the party until the camera was out of memory.
That evening, LunarGeography and Justin came over for a writers' group meeting. Tony didn't attend because he's been sick (an ear infection bad enough to send to him to the ER). He didn't call to let us know, so I called him to ask. I got Michelle who confirmed that we shouldn't wait for him. She was very happy, though, because she'd gotten word that she's been accepted to the parasitology program she wanted in Philadelphia. She'd been worried because they interviewed ten people for three slots.
The writers' group didn't have a lot to discuss because Justin's submission was only two and a half pages long. LunarGeography hadn't put anything in for discussion (nor had Tony, but his absence made that pretty much moot). I had about a dozen pages for people to look at between the rewrite and the bit they hadn't seen before. They seemed to like the rewrite fairly well. I got conflicting advice on a couple of passages and some recommendations for tweaking. We managed to get through my stuff fairly quickly too in spite of its length.
After that, LunarGeography pulled out the DVD of the Utena movie, and we watched it. Even the second time through, it still made no real sense. One can tell from moment to moment what's happening and almost why, but… It plays out rather like a dream with strange things that make no sense when strung together. We discussed it afterward and could even agree on some themes, but still… (If you like anime, I recommend Utena highly, but even more I recommend NOT watching the movie until after seeing the series. You'll drown in it otherwise.)
We sat around and talked for a bit after that. Justin says he should know where he'll be going to school soon. The closer of the two schools has already accepted him but wants to know by the 20th whether or not he'll be going there. He prefers the other school (Maryland at College Park), however, so he's going to call them if he hasn't heard by the 10th. If he goes to State, he'll probably stay in at least half of the games he's currently in here in town. If he goes to Maryland, the commute's just a little too long. He only plans to take a year for grad school and wants to come back here afterward, but I'm not convinced he'll return. His parents are in the area, but most of his contemporaries have moved on (He's 23). I rather expect that his plans will become more complicated.
When Scott and I finally went to bed, it was after 11:30. We settled in normally, and I turned off the lights. Unfortunately, I decided to sit up a little to adjust my pillows (we don't have a headboard so my pillows always migrate toward the gap between the bed and the wall. The stuffed animals tend to do likewise) just as Scott was also shifting. Our heads banged together hard (For quite a while, until I discussed it with him, I thought I'd hit his elbow). All I could do for a few moments was moan. Then I sent him after one of the gel packs from the freezer (we've got about half a dozen). I didn't notice any bruising the next morning, but it continued to ache off and on Monday.
