Mar. 25th, 2002 02:53 pmThis was a GURPS Saturday (GURPS being a rules system). Scott's game ran in the afternoon. We didn't accomplish much. Our characters are on a strange planet trying to find and destroy a device that's draining power from multiple stars. This plot line doesn't play to my strengths as a player, so I'm taking a back seat and letting the other players make the decisions.
My evening game was a little scary. All of the players were there. We joked that that means that the world is going to end. Of course, it quickly became clear that Lewis shouldn't have attempted to play. He'd been on call for 50+ hours and so kept falling asleep. He's got another month of internal medicine and then two of neurology before his residency refocuses in his area of interest, psychiatry. Everybody else was fairly alert.
I threw some unpleasant things at the characters. One person's apartment building burned down. Someone murdered another's confessor. A third discovered that someone had been trying to get information about his adopted daughter, and a fourth discovered that someone had been using his handles online to smear him. I'm trying to build up to a major confrontation with one of Justin's character's major enemies, a demon who wants to corrupt him. My goal is to create a situation that's satisfying for Justin to play out (and fun for the other players) that still gives a reason why his character would leave the group either temporarily or permanently.
Sunday, Scott had a bunch of guys over to play the Babylon 5 card game. LunarGeography's husband joined the group for the first time, and she came along. The game lasted about 8 hours and didn't actually end; they simply agreed that nobody was going to win in a reasonable timeframe. LunarGeography and I rented and watched two movies, Chocolat and La Femme Nikita.
I've picked the time period for my Egyptian LARP. I'm going with the 4th Dynasty, the end of the reign of Snefru and beginning of the reign of Khufu (aka Cheops). There are a couple of things that caught my attention as items I can play with. Snefru apparently built two pyramids, and one of them is unique. It's called the Bent Pyramid. The angle at which it's built changes abruptly part way up, and it has two entrances, one to the north (usual for pyramids of this period) and one to the west part way up the side (unique so far as we know). There's no sign that the Bent Pyramid was ever used as a tomb for anyone. Additionally, the surviving records name Snefru as the first Pharaoh of the 4th Dynasty and Khufu as the third but don't show anyone as being the second. (I'm basing all of this on a single source at present but do plan to search for other information.) I haven't decided what I want to do with the Bent Pyramid, but the succession is something I specified as important in my game blurb. The vagueness about the second Pharaoh of the dynasty means that anyone can take the throne without violating the historical timeline.
LunarGeography's birthday is tomorrow. I'm trying to come up with a good present idea (within my price range!) and having little luck so far. The best notion I've had is to see if the store where she buys her anime DVDs has gift certificates, but that seems too generic. Her husband got her a book on the art of Ceres (Speaking of which-- Jenn, if you're reading this, we want those DVDs back so that we can watch them! Matt and I have only seen the first five episodes, and LunarGeography's not much further along). Suggestions would be welcome…
