What's with the weather? I keep looking outside, hoping that the snow will be gone and finding it still there. We even got more yesterday (although not, fortunately, the 8-10 inches they were predicting). The flowers by the YMCA downtown look terrible, all mushy and crumpled. The temperatures have not been kind this year. I regret it because I enjoy seeing those small bits of life as I walk between the bus and the library. The same types of plants (perhaps even the same plants) grew there when I was in elementary school, so there's a certain nostalgia value on top of the pleasure of seeing something beautiful and alive.
I went to the public library yesterday to return a few items. Books can be checked out for four weeks, but CDs have only a two week circulation period. I've been borrowing a few of those to try out some folk music. The selection's not great, but they're things I can't easily find elsewhere. I hadn't intended to check out anything new this time around, but I couldn't resist taking a peek at the new shelves. I'm glad that I did because I found something I've been waiting for for quite a while.
I'm now most of the way through I Dare by Sharon Lee and Steve Miller. I've read all of their other books over the years, Conflict of Honors, Agent of Change, Carpe Diem, Plan B, and Pilot's Choice. Conflict of Honors was the first I read and is still my favorite. I got very attached to the main characters, Shan and Priscilla. The interaction of cultures that don't quite understand each other was great fun and handled deftly. I was happy when I saw that Lee and Miller had finally found a publisher for new books, Meisha Merlin. Apparently, their first three books didn't sell quite well enough for their original publisher to go on with them, but they did build a devoted fan base.
I like Meisha Merlin. They've picked up a lot of stuff that wouldn't see print otherwise and will take requests for o.p. books in fantasy and science fiction. If they get enough requests, they'll see if they can get rights to do a new edition. They're publishing P.C. Hodgell (Godstalk) among others. They do trade paperback editions mostly with an occasional hardcover.
After the stop at the library, I caught a bus to my psychotherapy appointment. I'd managed to keep the stop at the library short, so I could use a transfer instead of paying a second bus fare. I got out there with an hour to kill. I was going to stop at Denny's, but they were closed for kitchen cleaning (I'm glad to know they do that occasionally). I ended up crossing the street to Big Boy. I don't normally do that, even though I much prefer Big Boy, because Washtenaw's not easy to cross even with the light.
Unfortunately, Scott couldn't remember whether or not I had an appointment yesterday. He tried calling to find out but called after I'd left. He thought I might be out with LunarGeography and didn't want to end up sitting in a parking lot when I wasn't going to be coming out. The upshot was that I waited 20 minutes before going back to my therapist's apartment and asking to use her phone. The only good side of it was that I got plenty of reading time while waiting.
Monday, Scott downloaded Netscape 6-something. I can now read ODs that use the logger. I'm not trying to go back and read everything I missed because I'm not sure exactly when I lost each. I'm still figuring out the quirks of the new version of Netscape, and I'm not liking all of the changes. Getting set up for my e-mail was a real pain and took an extra day. I think I went through e-mail withdrawal yesterday.
We rented Iron Monkey and watched it in the evening. The plot was purely fluffy, but the action was rapid and acrobatic. I was pleased to discover that it's fairly easy to knit while watching something that's subtitled; I'd done it while watching anime last Thursday, but I hadn't worked very hard at watching the show. There's just no point in watching a martial arts movie without paying attention.
