Apr. 2nd, 2002 01:00 pmI picked out a birthday present for LunarGeography on Friday. She and I went to Barnes & Noble, and I bought her Howl's Moving Castle by Diana Wynne Jones which I'm quite sure she'll enjoy. It's funny and light but has enough substance to be taken seriously. I also got her Dark of the Gods by P.C. Hogell, which combines Godstalk and Dark of the Moon in one volume. I told her that she'd probably either love it or hate it. Very few people I've encountered have had a neutral reaction to the books. I'm hopeful that she'll enjoy them since both Matt and I like them a lot. We'll see. They're a bit dark and may not suit her current mood.
My Amber game went all right. I back tracked to cover the social situation I'd skipped the previous session and then got the three who'd missed that session caught up with the three who'd been present. Now all I have to do is decide what's actually going on with the situation they're in. I have a habit of throwing in weird and/or disconcerting things without having the vaguest notion of why matters are like that, who's behind it or how everything will work out. It's a strength and a weakness. I don't need to spend a lot of time preparing, but I do have to think carefully after the fact so that I don't trip myself with contradictions. Fortunately, players are usually pretty forgiving; they'll often come up with ideas that fill in the gaps for me (I don't generally tell them that they've done so?).
Matt has offered to maintain a website for the Saturday Amber game. Once our phone is working again, I'll send him the text I want posted and let the other players know that I want brief descriptions of their characters for the site. It won't be as fancy as what Laura's done for the Wednesday game, but I don't think it needs to be. I mainly want the game logs up so that all the players can have access to them. I'm going to have him cross reference to Laura's site for the visual images. Having decided what the basic npcs look like for one game, I'm not going to try to come up with different images for the second (Just to clear things up for those not familiar with Amber-- The game is based on a series of books by Roger Zelazny. The characters he created for those books appear in both of my campaigns; their personalities differ somewhat (a careful reading of the novels leaves one with considerable latitude in saying, "This character might be like that?"), but they're in both games. There are a lot of characters in the Wednesday game who will never appear in the Saturday game (not so much the other way around. Yet), however, because I make up a lot of characters.
Matt's Vampire game on Saturday proved rather frustrating. A moderately major villain unmasked himself, but we weren't able to do anything at all effective against him. It was rather like our characters got hit by a truck. I acceded to having the session run late in hopes that we'd be able to do something, but all we ended up with was bits and pieces of clean up. My character came through pretty much unscathed, but Justin's character now has a permanent mental problem (moderately severe paranoia) that can't be fixed within the game. I'm a little concerned that Matt's not going to try very hard with this game now that he knows that Justin's leaving. Justin and I have been the only ones available reliably, and Matt has to decide whether or not he wants to continue the campaign with Justin gone. I'll miss the game if he decides to drop it, but? The best other alternative would be to find a player to replace Justin, and that could be quite difficult.
