the_rckIt's been a busy couple of weeks. I ran another LARP Sunday the 145h, and I had to do all of the bits and pieces required to get ready for that. I ran with 24 players to start, including one man playing a female character (I offered to let him play her male, but after reading the character he decided that she made no sense at all male. Since one of her plots involved recognizing a child she'd given up to his father's care years before, I thought the character worked slightly better female, but I didn't see why a man mightn't recognize a long lost child and have spent years wondering what happened to it). We had two walk-ins midway through the game, and four no-shows. One of the no-shows notified me in advance and had an excellent (if unhappy) reason. The other three… Well, I'm still clueless. I need to e-mail them to make sure they're not dead.
The four absences forced me to reshuffle things a little. I moved three people from the characters I'd wanted them to play that I didn't absolutely need. (One was quite disappointed by the change as he'd loved his first character. Another was thoroughly bewildered by the new character who was more complicated than he could handle. The third never saw my first choice character for him and dove right in with what I handed him.) I also ended up combining two characters which created some puzzlement for a couple of people, but everybody seemed to cope with it admirably as soon as they heard what I'd done.
I do need to go back and write up the political plots a little better so that the various factions have clearly stated goals as opposed to implied ones. The talks that were supposed to be central for many characters went quickly and easily, far too much so. Of course, at the recap session, it sounded like all of the delegates thought they were getting slightly different things than what everybody else thought they were giving. I don't think a clear statement of position could hurt, though.
