May. 25th, 2002 02:45 pmFriday, I slept in a little bit. Then I got up and poked around online for a bit before putting the turkey in. It hadn't thawed much in the days we'd had it in the refrigerator, so I had to use warm water to get the neck and giblets out. It was a 13.1 pound turkey. I'd wanted something a little larger, but that was the biggest LunarGeography and I'd been able to find when we went looking. As it turned out, given how frozen it still was, that was about as big as I could handle in the time I had. The meat thermometer I was using didn't get up to a safe temperature until about the time I'd said we'd be eating, and I'd expected to have about 45 minutes to spare before then for carving the bird. As is usual when we cook a turkey, the meat was falling off the bones. I tend to take that as evidence that we've heated everything adequately.
After I got the turkey in the oven, I did a bit more cleaning. I tried not to overdo since I knew that would leave me unable to enjoy the party. I went back and forth between the computer and the cleaning all afternoon.
The first guests arrived at about 6:10. Justin showed up a little bit after that. I think about half of the people we invited actually came. We'd have had a few more, but Mary and David were down with the cold that's been going around recently, while Matt Q. and Jeannette were headed up north for the holiday weekend, and Matt R. was trying to put himself back together after the relationship he thought might be about to form didn't (He's still deep in the throes of a serious crush and alternating between hoping it'll work out and knowing that it won't).
Justin's fear that his gaming friends and non-gaming friends wouldn't mix well proved unfounded. A couple of them weren't sure what to make of some of the conversation, I think, especially when Tony started telling stories (his stories of his teenage exploits sound like pure urban legends, but his parents and friends from that time apparently corroborate the details). One of Justin's non-gaming friends ended up spending several hours in the dining room talking with Dorothy which led to much amusement from those of us in the living room and actually kept the party going a bit longer than I think it would otherwise have managed.
We had just enough food for everybody. The guy who talked for so long to Dorothy arrived late and brought chips. Those didn't get eaten (or even opened!), but almost everything else did. Some of Dorothy's vegetable tray remained, and I made too much stuffing (although it's possible that if it had been on the table when people were making their first or second passes it would have disappeared too). We've also got quite a bit of extra pop because I worried that the two and a half two-liters that we had wouldn't be adequate and made Scott buy more. Two guests ended up bringing pop as well (one provided the only diet beverage, so that was actually very helpful). Another brought a mixed six pack of Guinness and hard cider. I'd made sun tea (red zinger). It's possible we'd have gone through more of the beverages if I hadn't put them in the basement, but we really didn't have room for them upstairs.
