I wish they'd get a long term sub for Cordelia's school library. The librarian has been out for four weeks now, and there's been a different sub each week. Most of them have made the kids get a book and sit and read. The one this week let them use the laptops but didn't let them check out books. She didn't know how book checkout worked, and the materials she'd been given didn't explain it. I'm not sure how the previous subs knew about book checkout.
I have no idea how long the librarian will be absent. Two weeks ago, she told me in an e-mail that she expected to be out for 'several more weeks.' What that means, I'm not clear on. I also have no idea what's wrong with her. I don't feel like I know her well enough to ask. I mean, it's really none of my business. All I know is that it came on with no warning and will last quite a while.
The most recent sub was definitely angling for a long term assignment. She seemed to think that I had some influence over that (I have no idea why she thought that). I was pleased with her in some ways-- letting the kids use the laptops was really nice. I'm not sure that letting them do whatever they wanted to with the laptops was the right idea. They went straight for the online games. The sub was also eager to learn where all the various types of books went. She listened to me when I explained. I'm not so pleased that she didn't let the kids check out books. I think that's important.
