DVD logging

I have to wonder about any military force that has to rely on kidnapping random people in order to get elite pilots, but I suppose that bad guys don't have to be sensible. Were it me, I'd be more concerned about the probability that those pilots would defect-- as the hero does. This is the first time I've seen an anime with both fairies and mechs.
Ballet Shoes - I considered watching this with Cordelia, but she wasn't very interested in the idea, so I watched it while she was away. I think I'm just as glad. I'm not sure that she'd have understood what was going on at least half the time. In a year or three, after she's read the book, we'll get it from the library, and she can watch it then.
I'm not sorry I watched it, but I can't give it a blanket recommendation. It skimmed the surface of the story, compressing everything, but staying mostly faithful. The acting was largely charming, and the three girls had distinct personalities. I just wanted more.
Great Big Sea: Great Big DVD - I don't tend to watch music DVDs, and this was no exception. I listened to it twice through, however, and quite liked the music. I'll have to see what the library has by this band and then put what I like on my Christmas wish list.
Lunar Legend Tsukihime 1-4 - I liked these episodes better than I liked the first volume of the manga. I may actually (some day) pursue the series via Netflix (the DVD is one I got on close out at UCon last year). I still have trouble sympathizing with the main character-- The fact that the vampire chick survived his cutting her to pieces doesn't mean that he didn't cut her to pieces for no clear reason. I hope there's a puzzle piece missing because I don't like the current picture.
Mai-HiME 9-12 - I've utterly forgotten who the various characters are. It's been at least six months (and possibly longer) since I last watched any of this. The comedy and the action/drama are balanced a little oddly, but the comedy was easier to follow given what I've forgotten. I think there are two or three super secret factions all wanting to control the girls who can summon magical creatures and kill monsters. I'd think that trying to control those girls would be problematic, but I'm not an obsessive conspirator.
Patriotic Knights 24-28 - I feel like I have inadequate backstory for Miss Xi. I haven't figured out why (beyond the plot demanding it) she stole the things she did back at the beginning of the series or why (apart from her being one of the heroes) she's opposed to her brother's policies. Of course, I also don't entirely understand why so many men have fallen in love with her. She's extremely pretty, and she means well, but...there's something about her that doesn't work for me. (Then again, I'm not the target audience for her character.)
Does 'voluntary armies' actually mean 'rebels'? It seems a peculiar translation, but given that these are the translators who used 'harem' for 'brothel,' I wouldn't be surprised. The voluntary armies certainly act like rebels and are in opposition to government officials.
These episode surprised me by starting with a lot of violence. The hero got captured, beaten and otherwise tortured (shirtless scenes all around). The evil general shot fleeing peasants in the back after promising that, if they made it to the gate, he'd let them go. I'm being much more careful now about where Cordelia is while I'm watching this.
Patriotic Knights 29-32 - I suppose it says something that the relationship here that I find the most interesting is the one between Miss Xi and her brother. I expect him to die soon because he's one of the villains and because he's failed at his major villainous assignments due to his sister sabotaging him. I suppose I could be wrong, but I don't expect to be.
Primeval season 2 - I wish these seasons were longer. I'd like to see more character development and more adventures tracking creatures that've come through the rifts. I could do without the underwater stuff, though-- That sets off my anxieties like nothing else. I wonder if there's any good gen fic out there?
Secret of the Stones - Mind control, pseudo-druidic mysticism and small town claustrophobia combine in this one. Most of the child actors were wooden which made watching harder for me, but I was interested in the story. I was also amused to recognize Gareth Thomas (of Blake's 7) playing the father.
I'm not sure I can recommend this one. It suits a particular stylistic taste and will repel some viewers and bore others. 1970s BBC horror only appeals to some people. I don't mind it in small doses, but I know people who loathe it.
Teen Titans: Trouble in Tokyo - Utter silliness. The theme song karaoke wins my prize for funniest moment. The lyrics definitely sound like they went through a computer translation via four or five languages.
